No, he doesn't. Re-read the book and/or watch the video on the subject on his site.

I soon relearned the pain that I hated but enjoyed the post workout feeling.

I'm going to do some more of it. Anyone have advice on how to take advantage of my lack of muscle memory? routines or recommended advice? I've heard you get the most benefits your first few months
Read up on Starting Strength. There are other novice strength training programs out there (Greyskull is one I've seen recommended) but they all follow the same basic principles of compound lifts and linear progression.

Why were you in pain? It's pretty much a myth that making yourself hurt and ache after lifting is a good thing and a sign that you've done a good workout.

What is it then? I mean there's difference between "hurt and ache" and real pain, right? I just figured "good hurt" is a sign of muscles fibers being teared apart and ready to grow?

I feel awesome when I'm a wreck after a hard workout.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

DOMS is usually a sign of you not having performed this particular exercise before/in a while. Certain lifts like RDLs, with a significant eccentric component, also produces more DOMS. So no, it's not a positive sign in and of itself. Being a wreck after a hard workout is something different and again isn't positive or negative in itself. Depends.

Wasn't aware of the term "DOMS". Looked it up. Understand it now.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

Syndr0m, the "good hurt" you're talking about is DOMs. As Soulman says this isn't really positive or negative in itself. It can come about by doing exercises you're not used to, working out after an extended break, or by working out extremely hard. If someone doing a novice lifting program like SS is regularly aching for days after their workouts then they're probably doing something wrong, either by using bad form or by working themselves too hard before their muscles are conditioned to the work.

I'm rambling, but basically the amount you ache is fairly irrelevant as long as it's not hampering your recovery and ability to regularly work out. What's more important is the progress you're making on your lifts, and this is not directly linked to how much you ache.

Btw - if you really want to know what DOMs can really be like, take a few months off from squatting, then go back and hit your max lifts. Just don't schedule in anything that involves walking for the next week.

Just did my press for the first time since getting the advice to put only one2.5 kg weight on. I tried that and altered my grip and it worked out great.

Thanks a lot.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

due to injury i cant lift for at least a few more weeks, so i am going to focus on running in the meantime. i havent been doing any running for a long time. current mile time is prob around 8:30-9:00 since i did 1 today in 9:30 and felt good. does this seem like a good program to start with? i think the mile/5k make the most sense to train for but im open to suggestions.

http://www.runningplanet.com/trainin...g-program.html

is that website a good resource? if you know of a better site for this stuff let me know, ive read some on runnersworld too.

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I want to join a gym. Help.

Up until now I've been getting by doing everything at home with a bench, free weights/dumbells, dip station, pull-up bar, ab roller, etc without doing any cardio whatsoever. I recently had an injury where I can not do any type of running, HIIT or long-distance walking as it just aggravates the injury further. Oddly, there are many movements I am perfectly capable of doing without pain but even something like walking for a slightly long-distance is difficult. So, the (almost, i think?) perfect cardio for me would be LISS (sitting) of some kind at a gym or at home. So, rowing or a bike of some kind - I have no ****ing idea.

However, I want to get out of the house so a home bike or rowing machine is out for now.

I live in a city where there are many choices all within a ~2 mile radius. A few of them are small[er] yuppie-filled type places. There are also a few 'globo gyms' or w/e they're called: Gold's, Synergy, and Club Metro USA - don't really know if the last last one qualifies as globo. If my main goal here was to cardio-tard on some type of rowing machine or w/e which one of these gyms would be my best bet/bargain/atmosphere. This is a Hoboken type crowd, btw, for anyone who is familiar with N. Jersey/NYC.

anyway, this will be my absolute first time ever going to a gym to even attempt to train/cardio-tard and am slightly anxious? Maybe not the right word - I'm really not intimidated so much as I am just nervous that I'll look stupid doing something newbish.

To sum up: my main purpose for joining is really a) just to get out of the house, b) cardio-tard and, c) try out some of the equipment I don't have access to at home.

I'm still trying to lean out and get to 10% bf within the next 7 weeks or so before I start a "bulk" so there will be many days I go to the gym just for cardio.

I want to do month-to-month membership and don't want to get screwed by some dip**** salesman. What, if any, things should I look to just ignore them selling me? I'm thinking of just straight up telling them "I need month-to-month at your lowest rate with no commitments, whaddya got?" and just go from there. Is there a better approach?

Re: ****Official Beginner Question Thread****

I have it ingrained in my body to never workout for more than 75 minutes. I probably made this number up or got it from one of the muscle magazines a long time ago.

Anybody have any links for research on this topic. I bring it up because I just read some people's workouts are like 90 to 120 minutes (33 big blinds). Isn't that a cortisol bomb right there? I feel like I would be consuming my own Pectoralis Major by the time I reach 120 minutes Obviously voodoo, but help out a brother if you got any info on this little rock

um, wouldn't that depend on the intensity of your training

Everybody has this experience initially unless they grew up regularly going to a gym or could already move decent weight.

Just don't do something if you don't actually know what you're doing or feel doing it alone would be unsafe. Doing something at a lighter weight is better then doing something and getting hurt.

Also - ask. It never hurts and if you get acquainted with people in the gym that way it'll ease any tensions about being uncomfortable and being intimidated. If a bro gives you looks **** him, thats why he's a bro. The people you need to care about caring in the gym, don't actually care.

Let's say I ran speed "x" at the 100m when I was 12...assuming I was in shape, should my speed for the 100m be greater or less than "x" by the time I'm 26 years old?
