Re: The O-lifting Thread

So do you guys just add DB Snatches to the end of a work out, and how many reps/sets per arm are you doing? Also I figure it's best to learn them from the hang first, then from the ground, correct?

Re: The O-lifting Thread

i do heavy db snatches every monday after 4x5 squat and 5x5 bench or press. they are harder after press so i end up usually stopping at 2x4/5 for each arm. after bench i usually do an extra set per arm. each week i use a heavier db, although that willl change soon now that i used the 100s which were soul crushing.

i started from the ground. i haven't made a video to see myself doing them, but i don't think they're easy to really mess up. both pulls are much more natural, at least for me, than they are in a power clean. i think my main problem is that i still don't really squat down at all for the catch. but as long as you keep your lower back from rounding and don't mono-pull from the floor, you'll generally be fine imo.

what angles are the best to view the front squat?

did 1x5xarm on DB snatch today, even if it doesn't serve any purpose I'm going to keep progressing and see where I get, they're just way too badass of an exercise to not do. Also practiced push presses just with the bar as well as some power jerks.

any reason why we should be doing front squats vs standard squats? are there any pros to the former?

Re: The O-lifting Thread

My novice take is the front squat and the clean go hand in hand, I'm guessing working on the front squat should help your clean.

Re: The O-lifting Thread

I am hardly any good at all at o-lifting (I suck) but train front squats and high-bar back squats. Both are important for your clean, and for that matter, your jerk. And your snatch.

Re: The O-lifting Thread

I have nothing much to add to this thread other than to say I both love Oly lifting and I am also a rank beginner at it.

Had a PR snatch last night of 175lbs (which is also my 3RM power snatch). I think I have (hopefully) 20-30 lbs to add just via technique improvement. One of the nice things about being new... quick gains.

I have read mixed reviews elsewhere, but personally I really enjoyed Greg Everett's book (2nd edition just came out) on Olympic Weightlifting. It's helping me a lot as I learn the lifts.

Re: The O-lifting Thread

I've been working on DB Snatch and Push Presses lately, getting more comfortable and progressing with each.

Today I tried to BB Snatch for the first time ever, and it was not easy. Add to that the fact that there really isn't a great spot to do O-lifts in my 24hr fitness and I pussied out on any sort of remotely heavy weight. I worked from the hang and in triples, but really had no idea what I was doing. Ultimately they ended up being hang power snatches.

So, what are some basic beginner mistakes with the Snatch? I had trouble figuring out how wide of a grip to take and where I should be feeling the pull in terms of upper back, hips, etc...

Re: The O-lifting Thread

Christ. Buy Everett's book and enjoy a potentially multi-decade effort to learn a good full snatch without a coach. (I think shemp was toying witht he idea of learning a full snatch in his last bout of goal posting. He's old. This wouldn't be his first failure. I doubt he's hired a professional level coach.)

Re: The O-lifting Thread

I know this has been asked a bunch of times but has anyone ever found a chain/store that carries weightlifting shoes (besides Chucks and the like)? Before I order my do-wins/ironworks/etc I'd like to try them out, plus I hate ordering **** online.

Still say that of those who could come closest to my 500lb bench press and 5:00 mile challenge would be some 190lb Olympic weightlifters.

Wow, this is almost exactly what I've been looking for. Can anyone confirm this would be good programming? It seems a like a fair amount of volume for a novice lifter, but maybe a later stage novice like myself might see some good progress with this.

I'm pretty excited atm
