I think you're projecting. I have no idea what will work for MLYLT, and agree she'll need to figure out what works for her, but to say that for most people "food is a pretty big part of what makes life worth living" is an overreach. For me variety is overrated; I have basically the same thing everyday for lunch and it doesn't bother me at all. Great tasting food is pleasurable but to me the difference between the best meal I ever had and one that is merely good is very small. While I am not at the extreme of "taste doesn't matter, it's only fuel just put it in your mouth" (I will not eat things I don't like) eating is mostly just something I do when I'm hungry.
The point is - everyone is different. It seems to me that MLYLT is the type of person that would benefit from a fairly rigid plan to start if she's serious (and make no mistake, she hasn't really started yet) and except for the very occasional treat (monthly?) not add anything in until she's dropped +100lbs. But again, she'll need to find her own way.
