Dads might find this of interest.

Spoiler:

More facebook nonsense. I'm a bit torched by this one. Its a video of some guy going up to young kids(who he is a stranger to) with a puppy after obtaining parent's permission. He lures them away from a playground with promise of showing them more puppies.

The uncritical sharing and resharing of this as some object lesson in stranger danger has reached critical mass. I'm about to go full free-range parenttard.

crash,

I forget, are we FB friends? If not, would you please friend me? This is the kind of drama the internet was made for

Crash,
my BIL and sister got in an argument about it via whatsapp. I posted rustled jimmy memes and about the bulls until everyone settled down.

Two "Cali" folks posted on my fb recently, so I know how you feel!

Pretty sure Aidan is going to ban you from Facebook.

Stay safe

The trepidation i had when i got up and read the notification that "DT has mentioned you in a comment" was a bit surreal. Might be the second time i've been called on to be East Australian Correspondent, I'll be better prepared next time.

It's really hard to pretend to be working in a cube farm.

Just type "All work and no play makes biggerboat a dull boy" into an email a lot?

Dropped the overlord of all Dueces in to a gas station toilet today. This thing had to be 2.5' long wrapped around the bowl. Was so proud of myself that I even texted a couple people about it. Was going to take a picture of it, because someone out there has to appreciate that kind of thing. Stood up, and it was one of those ****ing automatic flush toilets on a sensor.

Almost cried.

The struggle is real w

W-

There is a canoe/kayak/SUP race in redding on memorial weekend every year. 100 miles of easy water.

We need an H&F weekend of 100 mile paddling, kabaddi, and Redding.

100 miles sounds like bad times to me but that's probably because my kayak is about as aero as a rowboat. 5mph is hauling ass in that thing. I constantly think about getting something sleek but then I wonder where I'd put it.

I also think about making one a lot. I have a small CNC machine so I could make the form pieces super easy.

100 miles is right up my alley. We went 35 this past weekend on what I'm guessing is much slower water.

RB I've got a couple books on canoe and kayak building. It's on my list of things to do at some point in junction.

I basically have all the equipment I'd need to make one anywhere from completely from scratch, to a kit or anything in between. All I need is time. Also I assume that whatever I'd make would be considerably heavier than what I could buy (due to materials)

Anyone ever use a neti pot for allergies/chronic sinus issues? I'm sorta desperate but this seems gross.

I've been researching using Carbon and Kevlar. I think I've got it figure out, but don't have a good way to make the forms. We might have to work something out. I've got my measurements in mind, but no great way to draw them to scale and then cut them in a precise manner.

Yes, it's not as bad as it seems.

Does anyone else leave their toothbrush/toothpaste at home, and then either buy new or get the free ones from the hotel they are staying at? Something about packing a toothbrush really bugs me. I have to have a new one at each place I stay.

Not sure I'll get a good night sleep tonight in Cleveland. Last time I was here my room caught on fire.

Doing it on the computer is how I'd start but I know that's not everyone's thing. I've done some form making by hand, by printing to exact scale, gluing the printouts to boards, bandsawing close to the line and sanding. Like I said I do havea small CNC machine although the scale might not be big enough. It can do about 15"x25". The main advantage is that it's perfect, in my experience I can do stuff by hand faster than with CNC when you figure in design time, but not as accurately or repeatably.

I hadn't actually considered something high tech though - I was thinking, like... strips of wood.

You know what the way to go would be, for real? CNC carving closed cell foam, use it for a mold, then dissolve it. I've seen people make bikes that way. I could do it on my machine in pieces but also I think you could rough it out pretty good by hand with a rasp.

I have a friend (maybe 5'8" 165 etc) who swears by it and he doesn't gush about much, either. I'd say give it a whirl

I've actually got the book that this guy references on his website.

http://www.microtek-inc.com/canoe/canoe.htm

Gene Jensen (renowned canoe builder, and the father of the modern racing canoe) never actually built anything in Kevlar or Carbon. It was all Cedar Strip for him. Most modern racing designs start as wood strip canoes, and then they use the wood strip as a Male Mold to build a Female Mold. After the Female Mold is complete, they use it to pump out canoes.
