Re: sugar addiction
My personal experience is in line with the results of a
recent medical review:
Quote:
We find little evidence to support sugar addiction in humans, and findings from the animal literature suggest that addiction-like behaviours, such as bingeing, occur only in the context of intermittent access to sugar. These behaviours likely arise from intermittent access to sweet tasting or highly palatable foods, not the neurochemical effects of sugar.
This is an issue for me because I normally go shopping only twice a week, and I tend to binge in the evening after the shopping, not on a particular substance but on the tastiest of the stuff I've bought on the particular trip.
But once I run out of a substance or make a conscious decision to avoid it, I normally don't have cravings. E.g. I've been avoiding granulated sugar for 2 days after the last overdose, thanks to the fact that I can stand the taste of green tea without it (unlike the ones of coffee and especially black tea).
Re: low-fat vs low-carb diet
LF (more specifically, replacing frying by microwave heating to remove the necessity for butter and oil) is what gave me fast results. I've never tried LC but I guess that I'd never stick to it because the serotonin deficiency makes me crave carbs anyway. It's just much easier behaviorally for me to remove fat than carbs from the diet.
