A year ago I woke up after I night out with multiple deep bruises all over my left knee and it was incredibly weak and painful. It felt like my thigh was going to snap over my knee and fold on my shin when I put weight on it. The pain was below the knee cap on the left side. I didn't hit it off anything at all.
After a month I ended up taking it to the doc and got an MRI, they told me all my ligaments were strong, no fractures, but that I had a bone bruise and it would take 4 months to heal. At this point I was walking on it but it still hurt and was weak. I couldn't run or lift with it.
Now, 14 months after the injury my knee is still giving me a ton of trouble. The knee often feels stiff and awkward to walk on. It bruises easily and occasionally I get a quick sharp pain, usually if I'm jumping on it or something. There was a few months during this span where I felt I was fine, but it came back.
Usually the bruises come in the morning and are a little bit lower. Not sure if this is from sleeping or because of stress throughout the day. I prob walk 10-12 miles a week on pavement. This is what happened after 2 frames of bowling.
Have you ever rolled your quads, ITBs or glutes? If not, that's where I'd start.
If you have the means, I'd see someone who's good at ART. Look for the person in your area who has the most certifications. The Biomechanics certification is the big one.

Frequently, joint pain is caused by muscle adhesions. Adhesions in the areas I mentioned above can all cause knee pain - right in the joint. Since your doc said the structure of your knee looks solid, I'd be surprised if you dont have a lot of muscle adhesions messing your knee up.
