Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Good workout this morning. 4 minutes on the punching bag with pushups and situps thrown in. I will be running at some point later today. I also need to still check my weight for the end of the week. Last weigh in I was at 211.0. I'm hoping for 210.5 tonight.

I read somewhere that you should only be trying to lose 2 pounds a week or else you might be losing muscle mass. How true is this? Especially for someone like me that has a lot of fat to lose?

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Afternoon session went well. I ran for 15 minutes for 1.5 miles. Weighed myself afterward and I was at 209.0, which surprised me. I didn't expect to be under 210. But I'm not complaining.

I'm thinking of doing a 5K eventually, maybe in early spring. I'd like to be under 200 lbs before I do anything faster than a jog though. I'm not sure my knees can handle strenuous running yet.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Good workout earlier this afternoon on the punching bag. 3x 2minute sessions on 1 minute rest in between. I did 10 pushups with the gloves on during each of my two rest breaks. This was only an 8 minute workout and it wiped me out.

I'm running on the treadmill tonight. 12 minutes is the goal. Also, I haven't weighed myself in a few days, so I will try and report this tonight as well.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

211.6 as of last night. Not too happy about gaining the 2 pounds back. I've been eating horribly though, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Good upper body workout today. I did my punching bag circuits with pushups in between again. My arms feel tired today--I haven't done four days in a row on the punching bag in a while, will probably take tomorrow off and focus on running a bit longer.

Still want to get a short run in later tonight.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

I did two sets of 3,2,1 yesterday on the treadmill. 3 minutes easy, 2 minutes medium, 1 minute hard. I did this twice followed by 3 minutes easy for a total of 15 minutes on the treadmill.

Good workout. I lost 1 one of the 2 pounds that I had gained back. 210.4.

I am trying to drink a lot more water. 64 oz per day is supposed to be a normal amount, and I drink maybe about 8. This should help me lose weight quicker, i think

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Still at 210.4. Weird, usually my weight fluctuates more than this.

I've cut soda out of my diet. Soda-free for five days now. I've been drinking a lot more water to try and get all the extra sugar out of my diet. I've been trying to avoid fast food too. Tonight, my family had McDonalds. I waited to eat until we got home, cooked myself a salmon steak and had a baby spinach salad.

Tonight's workout was my best one yet. I did the 3, 2, 1 workout on the treadmill again, 2 sets, but upped the intensity a bit higher for the medium and hard portions. Total 15 minutes. I also did 3x3 minute sets on the punching bag on 1 minute rest with pushups during the rest periods. This was only a minute longer than my longest punching bag workout but my arms were very fatigued at the end.

Overall, I am pretty happy with the way my training is going, although I wish I could lose weight faster. I want to be under 200 by the end of February. I lost a total of 7.8 pounds so far this month. I think 10.4 more in February is doable if I up the intensity just a little.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

I ran two miles outside yesterday since it was in the 50s. I have a hilly 2 mile loop that I run through the village, 1 mile downhill followed by 1 mile uphill. I went through the first mile in around 7 minutes, and was a touch under 10 minutes for the second mile. This kind of surprised me, even though it was downhill, 7 minute pace is pretty. That was easy run pace for distance runs in college. I know I'm still a long way away, but yesterday was a glimmer of hope.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Went for a very short run yesterday out on the roads. 1.1 miles (about) I did it pretty slowly, so I feel pretty good today. If anything, my upper body is more fatigued today from an increase in set sizes for pushups (40 at a time). I haven't weighed myself since Monday, I will probably measure it tonight or this weekend.

The water drinking is going great, I've been drinking at the very least 75 oz per day. I have also cut back quite a bit on coffee, so I'm not dehydrated all the time like I was before.

Thinking about doing a 5K in the future. Well, I'd like to do a half marathon maybe this summer, but I want to ease into it. In college, I used to do 20 mile long runs all the time, how hard can a half marathon really be? I did a 20K at the end of college and ran it pretty fast, under 5:45 mile splits, if I remember correctly. I did a 5K last summer, under 30 minutes, so I was happy with that. I would like to be under 22:00 ideally this summer.

But losing weight is my first goal. I can't achieve any of this if I don't lose weight.

Just throwing wild guesses here but it might have something to do with food and calories in it.

This is probably true. I have upped my water intake considerably to try and avoid over eating, but this is still obviously an issue. I've also quit drinking soda and fast food to try and help with this.

I've been doing a little reading on nutrition and I think that my problem isn't the fatty foods, however. I think it's the carbs that are hurting me.

That's all good and definetely beneficial but anyone trying to lose weight really should be tracking their macros/calories.

I've never tracked calories my entire life. I have no idea where to start. My wife does weight watchers, is that something that people have found beneficial?

I just ran a mile on the treadmill pretty slowly. I've been trying to gradually up my mileage so running at least a mile a day is the goal for this week. I know I won't fit it in every day, but if I am semi-consistent, I should be able to get in at least 6 miles total this week.

Of course, this is in addition to the other stuff. The sit ups and pushups need to be pretty regular. I am falling slightly behind in the pushups category, but I am right on with sit ups.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

It's been a few days since I've updated this. I have some good news, though. After my morning run (3,2,1 x 2), I weighed in at 208.8 lbs. Very excited about that. When I go for my 2 mile run outside tomorrow, I will be at 6 miles run for the week, which was my weekly goal.

Next week, I would like to run 8 miles, which should also be doable if I can get in two solid 2 milers.

Re: Knight's Training Log & Thoughts

Got my morning 2 miler out of the way already! Went through in a faster time than last week with a 16:45 total time, or about 8:22.5 per mile. Last week I ran 17:05. I was really pleased with this week's outdoors run, especially because I took the first mile fairly easy to save energy for the final hill.

I feel pretty good considering this was my highest mileage week so far this year with 6 total. I know that's not a lot, but I am being super conscious of my knees since I hurt them so badly this past summer. I jumped up to about 30 miles a week really quickly and could barely walk after a few weeks. I am scared of re-injuring myself so I am only increasing mileage very carefully. I ran 4.6 miles last week and I will be running 8 (hopefully) next week. I know I can handle more than 6 per week right now, but again, I don't want to jump up too quickly, so 8 it is for next week. I'll reevaluate after gauging how I feel then.

Way behind on pushups this week, but I am ahead on situps, so I am hoping that evens things out.
