I didn't read this many shades of grey, but started to watch one of the movies ( I think there are already many out? ). Found it incredibly boring and not stimulating in any way. Switched the channel after about 10 min. Both central characters seemed just to be super flat from the moment they first enter the scene.

On the other side one of my female friends is ecstatic about it. But she liked also twilight vampire films.
