Rippetoe's ideas are best served to take a rank untrained individual in any sport in any discipline and get that person to an intermediate level of strength in less than 12 months. (You know, Starting Strength.) Beyond that, you should start to think for yourself. And I think most people agree with that.

how can you say mike boyle advocates nonesense given that he is the trainer for the BU hockey team (one of the best in country), and other pro atheletes?
he also says that for beginners front squatting is important. but beyond that, his priority is keeping people healthy, and this is the most important priority for anyone involved in athletics. being really strong and being healthy overlap but aren't the same.

gorilla could you share some advice on food- like how to save time in preparation? how to eat a lot of calories? big calorie and easy dishes to make?

Logical Fallacy: Appeal to Authority.
Are you normalizing for genetic capability for athletes able to play Division-I hockey at a top 3 school for the particular sport?

This is complete nonsense. I could go train the Dallas Cowboys tomorrow and it'd lend nothing to my knowledge or ability. In fact its an argument that someone only takes elite athletes who's main goal is to stay healthy and has them do non-sexual physical masturbation in lieu of actually improving performance metrics. Why are people in the gym? To be better at their sport. What are the intermediate goals? (Stronger, faster, quicker, less injuries etc) Where is the substantiation that Boyle improves any intermediate metrics as compared to anyone else?

i really think you are missing the point on this one. the main goal of gym work for an athlete is so they can stay healthy and allow them to practice their sport more and more intensely without incurring injury.
kyle, why would so many elite athletes work with him if he wastes peoples time in the gym? also everything i see written about him on the internet by other top trainers is positive.
fwiw when i am at his gym i am actually quite surprised how LITTLE weight work his athletes do. their are some really huge football players there, they are always doing 10 m sprint work and other mobility and core exercises.

Bruiser,
You haven't answered my question. Additionally, you have perpetuated the logical fallacy of appeal to authority. His ideas about training can (and should) be evaluated on their own. Not because he coaches Division-I hockey. Such as...

1. Get lots of food.
2. Have a hot wife cook it for you.
3. Profit.
No, but seriously, my diet is about as simple as my training methodology. A standard day for me consists of 1 to 2 pounds of red meat or chicken, along with a pound of pasta (ftr, <3 hamburger helper). That all gets thrown together and I start eating at 8am. I eat on that until noon-ish, whether it's gone or not, then I usually grab a burger or something like that for lunch, then continue after lunch with the meat/pasta. Then it's just a standard dinner, steak and taters, chicken wings, something like that. Before bed is some snacks or ice cream with a lot of milk. This is the routine that I've been in for months now, and it usually takes me about two weeks to get used to eating so much, and even then it can be too much. Just last week I threw up mid-way during my lunch at a restaurant, only to sit back down and finish the meal. I was upset about the wasted calories, however. So the prep time is actually less than an hour a day, really just the meat and pasta cooking. I used to just cook huge quantities on sunday and put it in containers for the week, but the last time we did that we made a pan of chicken:
The problem with that plan? I ate it all in one sitting as soon as it was cooked, along with a box of mac and cheese. I did the same thing a few months back with 4 good size rib eyes and mashed potatoes. I had to up the fiber intake the next day after that one, lol.
So yea, cook huge quantities of food, put it in containers, and condition yourself to eat huge quantities of food.

I'm jealous, cause the food is by far the toughest part for me. I'm naturally a lean guy and I don't really put on much fat regardless of diet, so putting on any weight is difficult. I suppose there are worse fates though then being a pretty lean 300, lol. Tbh though, I'd trade about 5% bf right now to weigh 20 lbs more, just to see what it feels like
I started my 'serious' training in 1998 at about 175lbs. So it's taken me 12 years you put on 125+lbs. Long journey.

Did you ask the waiter for a bucket, or did you go into the restroom?

lol, i could feel it coming so I made it to the restroom in plenty of time. It's not the first time it's happened, so I guess I'm used to it. I've done it in the middle of training sessions too. Luckily it was just a one person restroom so no one else had to deal with it.
Now that you mention it though, I should have just asked for bucket. Imagine the calories I would have saved by not getting up and walking to the restroom.
