Besides, I've found through the years that regardless of what I say, people will still have their own opinion on the matter.

Depends what you mean by decent really. If you mean being able to do all the events without falling over, then a few practices. If you mean be a competitive amateur, the probably a few seasons. Obv there are a ton of extraneous factors (height, weight, strength, power, background, who is helping you, etc, etc...) that make a huge difference.

Why are you doing bicep workouts? Thats so inefficient!! You should prob look at doing Starting Strength until youre more experienced with better programming. Riptoe would disagree with your workout routine.

Yeah kinda like that squat swing thing that looks like something they would charge you $10 at a theme park to ride

C'mon, he's way past SS. My understanding is the biceps stuff is for the caber toss, hence "caber curls."

Dammit I hate missing internet funnies and being all pompous about it

I always shudder a bit when someone drops a really heavy weight after locking out a deadlift, isn't the chance of an injury bigger that way? Although it did look like you cramped the fingers or something from the look on your face.

BAD pkrplyrx, BAD!

Saw your ultimate inspirational video and saw some of the World's Strongest Man stuff (Atlas Stones). The guys who compete in that, do you know what the best 1RM max is at deadlift and squat and bench

lol, you're right. Lemme get a note pad and head over to the SS site.

On a serious note though, I have had three friends tear a bicep tendon while competing, so I try to throw in a couple sets per week just to make sure something is getting done.

It would be worth the price of admission.

Yea, there are a couple events where the biceps are strained/potential for injury is increased.

I wouldn't think, but I suppose it depends on who's dropping it, lol. Tbh, I usually don't drop from the top but I was kinda excited and it just happened. I've been chasing that number for quite a while.

There are pretty big discrepancies from individual to individual. 7+ deads (with the a lot of the high level strongmen guys at 8ish), same with squats, and who knows about benches, probably between 400-500 for most. The bench just isn't an athletic movement and has pretty much no carryover in the athletic world. I haven't benched seriously in probably close to a decade.

From what I've read, that's pretty much what Bill Starr thought. His original program was supposed to have overhead press as the only pressing movement, but thought that football coaches wouldn't go for it, so he subbed bench presses instead.

SHOT's just being stupid and doesn't understand the difference between a nub who can barely DL 200 lbs, and an elite strength athlete like your wife.

Also, I do think there is legitimate use in doing bicep work, I just get 100% of mine from chinups since I'm not close to the limits of my progression there. It can help with sore elbows/tendinitis caused from squats/etc and it's just generally a good idea to keep the muscles around each joint in balance.

i think rows from various angles are some of the most underrated exercises. in any combat sport or contact sport, upper body pulling strength is vital(esp wrestling, brazilian jiu jitsu) and rows more closely mimic the action than chins, pull ups or curls imo. also they help correct a lot of strength and posture imbalances, plus big gunz ftw bro

There is nothing wrong with bicep curls. People are just ****ing ******ed and for some reason things that heavy pulling ignores the bicep whereas they'd never do tricep kickbacks instead of heavy pressing.

Theblackkeys: Learn sarcasm better.

Gorilla: I might have missed it in this thread somewhere, but can you direct me to some websites representing these events in the northwest area? Also to areas I could potentially get training? Im honestly very interested in turning my meathead strength into more functional strengths. Obv I cant compete in these events because of my extracurricular activities but I would love to incorporate some of the training into my routine a few days a week.

I was never tested as an amateur, and as long as you don't advertise it I wouldn't base your decision on that, tbh. After all, it is still a bunch of grown men competing in strength based events.

www.nasgaweb.com is the best place to go for all the info.
