ty. I'm sure kilt jokes are cliché to highland gamers, but I thought I had something unique to offer.

I'm actually surprised it took 50 posts before the first one

this log is great. I can't believe no one has made a "world's strongest babies joke" yet

Gorilla. You are a BEAST!

I haven't gone through this entire thread yet, but I will be learning a lot from this log.

Hope you hit that 700 dead soon.

Going from 230lb to 300lb:
have you noticed any quality of life issues? fatigue or injury problems?
has your light hammer throwing/overall speed improved as you've gotten bigger and stronger?

Yeah, but what does that have to do with his question?

It has to do with the fact that if he had used them in the past it probably wouldn't be in his best interest to disclose that on a public message board since his sport doesn't allow them.

No, although the wife says I snore a lot worse now I think it's the dog, tbh.

Anytime I jump up in weight rather quickly, to the tune of 10lbs+, there seems to be a couple week week adjustment period where tying my shoes or walking up the stairs is pretty winding, lol. But the body seems to adjust nicely and all is right with the world after that.

I don't think any of my injuries are a result of my gains. I've had plenty of injuries, but I push my body pretty hard and throwing heavy things around is pretty taxing anyway. Small price to pay though, really. Knock on wood, this off season has gone pretty well so far.

Yea, I do think that my speed explosiveness has increased with my size and strength gain. The reasoning could be far more complicated than, "I got stronger so I'm faster now", though. It could very well be that I learned how to apply the power better, or I came close to perfecting the thousands of reps that it takes to learn something like that. More than likely, it's a combination of everything.

This season will be the true test though, because I know somewhere there will be a point of diminishing returns where I'm bigger and stronger, but not as quick and powerful. I competed last season and the season before at around 275lbs, which worked out really great and I had some good throws despite fighting injuries. So if I do a couple competitions at 300lbs+, and I find that I'm too slow or unable to apply the strength like I need to, I'll just drop back down to 275lbs. My mind will have the toughest time with that though, lol.

Thanks Nottom, I figured the reason for my subtlety was fairly obvious.

Besides, I've found through the years that regardless of what I say, people will still have their own opinion on the matter.

OMG it's NOT the dog! We have a miniature (although extremely muscular) wiener dog! Craig snores SO bad I have to use hardcore ear plugs and I can still hear him. I've woken up at night, been on the other side of the house...and STILL heard him.

Don't make me post the audio clip!

Thanks for posting. Excellent stuff. Pretty similar to what I do except you're 100+ #'s heavier, a lot younger and a ****load stronger. I completely agree with you on reps (I very rarely do over 3) and the basic game plan (squat, push, pull). Is there a place in Highland Games for 50+ year olds?

BTW, Kara you are amazing. I remember reading about you on the P&B board a few years back: http://powerandbulk.com/phpBB2/viewt...=kara+bohigian The comments are, err, entertaining (hopefully not offensive).

Edit: I just noticed the original poster on the P&B thread. Does Gorilla4Sale = WildGorillaMan?

G4S,

I don't suppose you know your vertical jump? The fact that you can do the pool jump would make me think it might be pretty impressive.

Thanks Mojo! Lol after training, competing, being on message boards, etc. in male dominated strength sports my whole life I've heard it all and definitely don't get offended!

There's a big masters presence in Highland Games with some great competition over 50! Craig is at lunch right now, but I'm sure he'll elaborate more when he gets back.

This is pretty great.

Where in Ohio are you at? I'm from Cleveland and head back from time to time; I plan on being back for a week around July 4th. With any luck... my lifts will only be 70% as much as yours. Except for the FS which I doubt I will have any level of competency in.

Absolutely! Like Kara said above, the Masters (40+) class in Highland Games is really big. The only real switch is that they throw a 42lb weight instead of a 56lbs weight, everything else is the same.

Nope, I'm C. Smith on the P&B board, although I don't think I've posted too much there. My name on here is just bad timing, lol, I think I had a Magilla Gorilla avatar on Stars at the time.

I actually have no idea. Other than the pool jump and the 43" box jump, I haven't done any other jumping stuff. I'd like to find out sometime though.

We're in Dayton, hit me up if you get this way, although it's still a ways from Cleveland.

I just checked out the San Diego HG. It is held in late June and the masters class is 50+. That doesn't give me much time to train events. Do you work event training into your normal WO's? Thanks.

Well, I don't practice any more (since 2006), but when I did I would have my usual 2-3 workouts per week and add in 2-3 throwing sessions per week (often times on the same day, one right after another just for convenience).

But tbh, as a first time no one is going to expect you to blow the doors of anything, and that fact that you are already strength training and are strong will put you ahead of some of the competitors. I suggest that even if you don't have much time with the events to do the game anyway. You will have a blast and just being out there will increase the learning curve by a huge amount.

The entry form is here: http://www.saaa-net.org/

And all the standard Highland Game info is here: www.nasgaweb.com

DO IT!

This def something I would like to get into after Im done being a oiled up meat-head...How much training with the specific events does it usually take so your form is decent?
