I somehow took a week of training, and when I dont train I eat like crap... oops.

I do play very crappy poker when I dont go to the gym too, fps'ing all over the play and just clicking random buttons.

i've been doing medicine ball pushups as my secondary press excercise twice a week. They're pretty badass.

left hand on ball, right on floor- 10 reps, switch hands 10 reps, both hands up on medicine balls 10 reps rest.

They're almost one handed in focus, hand on floor merely stabilizes.

i think i got the idea from seeing various MMA workouts where i see people banging these babies out.

This is the reason cameras are banned in some gyms.

OK... I saw a link in some other thread and I'm intrigued by that 20 rep squat program...

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/20_Rep_Squats

Questions:
Anyone done it before? Results? As hard as it sounds?
There are 5 or 6 programs on there... which one should I do..?

I like the sound of this one... because I would like to keep working on my bench and press... Is "standing press" pretty much the military press?

Squat: 1x20
Pull-Overs: 1x20
Bench Press: 2-3x10
Pull-overs: 1x20
Bent-over Rows: 2-3x15
Standing Press: 2-3x12
Conventional Deadlift: 1x15

So do I just do that 3 times a week... sounds freaking hard...
03-01-2009 , 07:54 PM
...actually... I like the look of this one too because I like the cleans and chins and dips... but can I throw a bench in too..? Really want to keep benching...

Power Cleans: 5x3
Squat: 1x20
Standing Press: 2-3x12
Chin-Ups: 2 sets to failure
Dips: 2x10
Conventional Deadlifts: 1x15

My new "gym" doesn't have barbells. Will I die of the AIDS if I deadlift with a Smith machine?

Benching for high reps to failure with a breathing/forced rep protocol is one of the most dangerous things you could possibly do in the weight room

I'm taking this public speaking class, don't want to, part of this honors program thing etc. We're doing this demonstration speech on anything. Gay.

I'm gonna teach how to squat, using a broomstick as a prop. 5-7 minutes would be pretty easy w/an extensive intro. Covering reasons to squat and the history, technique and technical aspects, common errors and their fixes, variations (OH), whatever. Ideas appreciated. Gonna outline it soon.

I should probably buy that broomstick (lol where do i get this), and some sweatpants tomorrow so I don't feel too weird. Or maybe I should go the opposite route and just flex my quads and glutes the entire time as I speak.

I'll try not to plagiarize Dan John too blatantly. I don't think anyone will be getting down and squatting so it will just be an explanation and demonstration. If one person goes home, squats, and doesn't dislocate their hip 40 years from now as a result, I will consider the demonstration a success.

hrrmmm... ok, is that because of the chance of a bar to the throat, or some medical or scientific (...other than gravity... ) reason?

If I was giong to do this kind of program, what is a good way to work a bench in?
03-01-2009 , 09:37 PM
Also, you can get a broomstick at any super market or hardware/handyman store...

I don't know, bench normally? With 20 rep squats, you are supposed to breath deeply between reps and force out rep after rep after rep. It's a long, long set.

Imagine supporting your bench weight locked out with your arms and trying to inhale deeply with the bar in that position while struggling for every rep for a minute+. Seems unpossible, and dangerous even if spotted very carefully.
03-01-2009 , 09:53 PM
00snitch, genuine question, do you realise 20 rep sets of squats are usually with your max weight for a 10 rep set, so your "rest" time is spent with the bar on your shoulders?

because it seems to me AJ thinks you will be doing that protocol with the bench, which is obv dangerous.
03-01-2009 , 09:54 PM
Ok, some of the variations on the program have you benching 2-3 sets of 10-12... would this be safer?

e.g.

Randall J. Strossen's Super Squat Program

Squat: 1x20
Bench Press: 2-3x10
Bent-over Rows: 2-3x10

I really don't like bent over rows... could I do something like that but scrap the rows for chins and/or dips? and/or add deadlifts...

Yep, I think I understand how it works.

I think my current 5rm is around 255. So I'm giong to start at 255-(18*5)=165.

So about 70kg.

aj,
That actually sounds like a lotta fun. Pick a pretty girl as an assistant.

We're talking squats right?

If so you should probably still be making linear progress on SS.

Seems like it would make sense to wait until you are intermediate to do the 20 RM routine.

EDIT - Thought you meant your 1 RM was 255 rather than your 5 RM. Not sure my comment still applies.
