Personally I've only tasted 3-4 of the great stouts, but it's impossible to say that USA#1 doesn't dominate this category. How you would get your hands on the best though is beyond me, they are in insanely high demand here... even I only find something great a few times a year (e.g. local places tapping Founder's KBS, waiting in line for a bottle of Three Floyds Dark Lord, bartender at a local bar that had just found a barrel of a few year old Goose Island Bourbon County Stout... <3 <3 <3 ). As a tourist you would NEVER have access to that stuff unless you knew a beer nerd or were some sort of twitter beer stalker. It's impossible that there's anything better in Norway.

Yeah unfortunately it's too late. And I obv never said the bolded. Great Divide's best stout (espresso something something) was prob comparable to the best stout I've had in Norway. I'm probably not enough of a stout affecionado to be able to fully appreciate the best/heaviest stouts anyways.
cobra,
thanks but yeah it was too late. Just walked all the hills back up to the hotel and couldn't bother going back down/up again (going later in the evening for food at The House) so just used the hotel "gym".

Right, just saying to judge USA#1 on our best, not our averages. On average our beer in general (not stouts, but all beer) is a tasteless miller lite. I believe you did say, and I quote, "USA#1".

Soulman isn't even aware of the significantly better Danish stouts. I wouldn't really worry about it.

Sure. I've had more good beer in the US than anywhere else, and like you say I haven't even had that many of the great ones.
Complete aside, but are there good microbrews everywhere, even in all the southern states?

it's getting to be that way. Not sure about the deep south but I'd be surprised if there weren't a few, and distribution keeps improving (the distro system is still the one really ****ed up barrier to entry the macros have over the micros).
West Coast is top dog for sure, though. There's some top notch **** in the north east and throughout the midwest, but from SD all the way up to Seattle it's pretty bananas.

It isn't close. The South and Midwest are pretty vastly inferior. There is some good stuff (unique stuff like Purple Haze or their Strawberry product), and probably some stuff comparable to Northern Europe.
But really, why is there a need for a local brewery to make a porter? Unless its absurdly cheap I'm gonna buy Anchor Porter (or has some other gimmicky reason). The nat'l availability of top top stuff is improving day by day. The average microbrew is pretty terrible and I blame brewpubs.
Edit: If you go out to random brewpubs or poorly reviewed microbrews, you'll find a steady stream of locals drinking their swill. I find this incredibly tilting. Especially when it is just a crappy version of something better you can get at the same place.

I don't know what "good" microbrews are, but there are plenty of random ones around in addition to the usual suspects.
I'm surprised there aren't more dudes brewing their own beer itt.

This will never happen, the reason those beers are all so popular is because people dont want to taste anything, they just want to be told what to drink & to get drunk.
You start mixing that up with crazy **** like "flavor", and people will have nfi whats going on.

One of my best mates is a king homebrewer, has medelled at the national homebrew championships. Some of his stuff is just ridiuclously good.
I went along to the state compititon with him a couple of times, which basically degenerates into 50+ beers on tap along with a whole ton of bottled stuff left over and everyone getting ****faced.
A++ day, would do again.
