Re: General Gym Observations

Meh I think guys here underestimate the creepiness factor at some gyms. Women have the newb factor + creep factor to deal with. I've been a member of maybe 6 or 7 gyms and half of them, whenever a decent looking girl walked in, half the dudes would openly stare at them.

(another 1/4 are checking them out using the mirrors)

heaven help them if they start doing RDLs or SLDLs.

Yeah, the creep factor is pretty big - I can understand this making a lot of women uncomfortable.

A few years ago, I was training when a woman with short shorts hit the squat rack. She squatted 225 for reps, so I checked out a couple of reps. Someone asked me what I thought. I was pretty focused on training, so replied in all seriousness, "she was a couple of inches above parallel, but looked solid otherwise." The guy just shook his head and walked away.

Re: General Gym Observations

the only times i felt gawked at are when its other asians and they obv have to check the competition.

funny thing, today me and some other asian guy started squatting at the same time in the power cage and squat rack that are right next to each other. i think he was using me to gauge how long a rest he wanted to take in between sets, and we kept squatting in sync at the same progressions of 135, 185, 225, 245, 275. first time i felt people might have been looking cause we were obv gay lovers

that is very natural. i do it when other people are lifting around me. i don't want them to think i am just watching them lift.

IMO, if anyone cared at all, they'd evaluate you on your intensity relative to your current ability. Hard training, good form, a minimum of sitting around and texting, etc. win more respect than pure strength. Even with that, I think most lifters respect the fact that people -- regardless of current conditioning level -- are doing the right thing and getting themselves into the gym.

I swear I do get weird looks a lot, today the dude doing 135lb 1/4 squats in the smith machine next to me was definitely giving me weird looks while I was doing 185lb real squats, but I've learned to ignore that since I'm pretty sure about my general knowledge at this point. If I had no idea about how to work out I think I'd feel differently.
He's probably thinking he should warn you that squats are bad for your knees!

FWIW, I personally don't think anyone thinks squatting 185 lb deep for reps is snicker-worthy. As for me, I know that person can probably half-squat 275 lb and respect that he is not.

That's funny.

Your progressions are pretty standard weight amounts. If you threw a 2.5 on, I wonder if he's copy that. Barring that, you could put 455 on and pretend to initiate an attempt to see if he'd go for it.

it went through my head to add 2.5 or something...but then he might add 5 and win the battle and we'd have a war on our hands!

I get stared at a lot by both guys and girls (running good?), but I'm nothing special and I don't exactly have a presence (I'm not intimidating or anything), so I don't get it. I almost never make eye contact with anyone. I just look around casually when I'm resting to see if anyone I know is around, or look at the ground.

Yeah, I think this thread is proof that people do indeed have to worry about being judged. With that said, most regulars are always eager to help out if a newbie asks questions- if anything it just strokes their ego and makes them feel good that someone considers them a reliable source of gym info.

Re: General Gym Observations

Hahaha, this thread took a funny turn. I go to a crowded commercial gym, and I feel like everyone does their absolute best to avoid anything that could even be mislabeled as eye contact with me. But when I do squats or clean and jerk, I get that feeling like someone is staring at me. I'm probably just a narcissist.

There's a lot here about gym etiquette and lifting technique observations, but very little on the physical condition of the lifters (except when mentioned in conjunction with an observation, like the standard comment on someone clearly too small for the weights he's trying to lift who uses either horrible form or a bro spot to cheat it up).

Oh I agree...I was just saying that this thread proves that people are looking around to see what others are doing wrong. So newbies who think "I'm scared to go to the gym because people may judge me" are correct in thinking that.

If newbies are too scared to be judged to go to the gym, they don't DESERVE going to the gym. Lamest excuse ever.

To all fatties reading this:

Where are you more likely to be judged, and where would you RATHER be judged?

-At a gym, trying to improve yourself

-McDonalds, eating french fries
