i stoopid.

That's why you see a guys tugging hard on the bar before their lift to make sure there isn't slack. Also helps to prevent bicep tears in case you have some bend in your elbow when you pull (mainly for deadlifts but same concept).

The same as Cha59 pretty much. To make the knee follow a specific path or perhaps to make me actively squeeze it a bit inwards Needless to say, I only did it once.

Re: General Gym Observations
Saw a dude just loading and unloading the leg press machine today. Filled it with 45s. Took the 45s off and put them away. Filled it back up. Unloaded again. Not sure how long he had been doing it. He might still be doing it. It may have been nihilist performance art.
Also, and this might go in the beginner thread better, what is the purpose of a ~12 inch long PVC pipe with a ~4 foot long string tied to a 10lb plate? My gym has like 2 or 3 of them lying on the floor at random places. I've monitored these devices hoping to see someone do something with them but no luck thus far. They'd be pretty effective weapons if you wanted to crack some skulls.

Re: General Gym Observations
This ^ it is a forearm exercise, atleast I think it is.
The one at my old HS was just a piece of metal with a piece of string attached to it and a 10lb plate, that you roll up and down slowly.
Injury question: When I do dumbbells curls being bored at the computer or I just feel like getting a sick bro burn, I used to notice a pinch in a tendon in my left forearm, when say I would get to the top of a hammer curl. It doesn't happen really anymore while curling a heavier dumbbell.
This pinch came back today while I was pressing. Extending up and over the head is no problem, when i bring it back down to chest level I feel a pinch in the same spot, there is probably nothing I can do to make it go away, just looking for some info if anyone has it.

Re: General Gym Observations
Reminds me when I saw this guy 'training' this guy doing lat pulldowns, with twice his bodyweight, and pretty much doing it for him right behind him, pumping him up to do more and more. It was akward to say the least.
this thread needs more pictures/video, next time I go to the gym I am getting something.

Re: General Gym Observations
do you guys cringe or smirk when you see PT's having their clients do exercises with terrible range of motion?
also a big F U to the ppl who use the squat racks as a place to talk on their cell phone. one of these days I'm going to accidentally drop a 45 on someones foot when unracking the weights.

Weird. When I saw G4S answering this question, I expected the answer to actually be: "A weapon used to crack skulls".

Re: General Gym Observations
Am I a douche if I just dump weights on the floor when presented with the following:
I
I--10kg/10kg/2.5kg/5kg
I
I
I
I-20kg/20kg/2.5kg/5kg
I
This is a plate rack, I need the 20's and 10's, the 2.5's and 5's are in the way. I just don't give a **** anymore, and leave them on the floor.
Also, do I have a responsibility to alert the clueless to Starting Strength? Two 17 year olds were conversing about their training, so I pause my ipod and listen in while they do preacher curls and hear one advocate 12 reps for the biceps, then do incline curls. One of them even rearranges the plates when he puts them back so I kind of like him, fighting the good fight.

Re: General Gym Observations
Personally I move the 2.5s in a spot like this, since they're so small it's not a big hassle. If the plates are totally random I just put the ones I don't use wherever on the rack.
If you're gonna alert everyone who's clueless you're in for one big job...

Tough sell. They're 17, so they're probably working out exclusively to get teh big gunz to impress the ladies. Maybe if their conversation sounded like they actually gave a **** about their program for its own sake, it might be worth a shot...but even then you should wean them slowly and tell them they can still do chins/dips on the side or something...the withdrawal from the pump might be too much for them.

Go all out and put the 2.5s behind the two 20s when you're done. If you're gonna be a douche, at least excel in it.

Re: General Gym Observations
I will excel, make no mistake about it. Whenever I'm in the gym just before it closes I plan on doing some isometric deadlifts with as much weight as I can fit on the bar. Here's a diagram of my devious plan:
2.5/10/5/20/1.25/25/10/20/5/25----------------------------25/5/20/10/25/1.25/20/5/10/2.5
267.5kg or 150% of 1RM? That's a good weight for an isometric isn't it? Please answer, this is very important to me and my training.
This set up is even better:
25/25/20/20/15/15/10/10/5/5/2.5/2.5/1.25/1.25-----------------------1.25/1.25/2.5/2.5/5/5/10/10/15/15/20/20/25/25
Ugh what am I doing? The gym management are morons as I've previously documented and there is no progress in sight with them so I'm fighting dirty. Maybe leave a note saying 'new barbells please or this will never stop'. I also need an Islamic Hijabl to conceal my identity when I'm in the gym.

It could be worse, fu to my gym that put the decline bench next to the squat rack, so I need to wait for retards doing sit-ups because the bar would hit them when doing squats.
