I remember these mile runs from high school rather vividly. It's just laziness. If you're allowed to walk half of it why push yourself?

Also jogging a mile is actually pretty taxing for a normal kid. I'm not saying it's tough as in "zomg I can't do this" but as in "wow this is really not fun".

I sweat when I walk up stairs on a warm day. My cardio is just fine.

I just got back from my first 5k and I didn't get any goddam participation anythings.

There were a LOT of kids at the 5k this morning (charity run for Las Vegas Ronald McDonald house) and tons of them were running, then walking, then running, then walking and quite a few of them actually jogged at least 1.5 miles of it and all of them finished the whole 3 miles.

The only time we ever did any sort of timed mile was for the presidential fitness test or whatever it was called, and since I could never do the required pullups I was always out of contention before we ever ran the mile.

At the gym today saw a guy doing etreme kipping dumbbell curls, I mean talking a lot of leg/body English. Looked like a good total body workout, provided you don't throw your back out.

not wanting to get sweaty and/or take a shower seem like lame excuses, imo
I'm curious if you know what high school it was. I am from the Cincy suburbs.

Two Brazilian looking guys in the gym today, both looked decently athletic at some degree, supersetting various dumbell exercises with ridiculously light weights and a crap ton of reps, like 15 lb'ers and 20+ reps. In between they were talking super loud Spanish/Portuguese to each other with random training terms I could understand thrown in

*foreign talk * TRICEPS * foreign talk * UPPER BODY * foreign talk * etc.

Brazilians love dickgirls.

I'll take my soft Irish physique and predisposition for alcoholism over sexual deviancy, thank you very much.

this happened a while back. 2 guys at the leg press, 1 gives the other a hit of speed infront of the whole gym then he proceeds to squat the wrong way around in the leg press so his back has no support and it looks like its about to give out on every rep.

have to relate a story from years ago back when i was in univ. Our gym wasn't that great so there was a premium on the 45's. these 3 asshats (civil eng obv) were doing leg press and basically had a monopoly on all of the 45's ..... like they loaded the press to 900 ****ing lbs.

Now this would be cool and all if they actually you know pressed the damm weight. But instead they took turns doing like 1/8th leg presses and grunting and being tards. Plus serious time wastage in between sets and 3 guys they were ruining it for everyone.

I was grumbling b/c I wanted to do squats and there were no plates. Luckily an old friend from residence, 5'10 225# football playing badass was doing some cardio so I went and shot the **** with him and bitched about the 3 idiots ...... right away he walks over to them and threatens to kick the crap out of all 3 of them unless they a) do real presses b) return some of the 45's so other ppl can use em

I hate seeing people hog the 45's to do 1/8 presses, seriously one of the most tilting things for me in the gym. I also hate how people think there bad ass for pressing 600lbs, that was cool when i did it as a sophomore in high school, sigh.

Was going to do deadlifts/press/chull ups but decided to repeat front squats @107.5kg after I screwed up on Saturday. Got to the gym and some guy is using the squat rack for presses, so I warm up somewhere else waiting for him to finish. He does and moves on to squats and I'm still warming up nearby so he asks if I want to work in while he does 3 sets of 5. Ding Ding Ding 'You doing the Rippetoes?' 'Haha yeah' Rippetoe is going global. I point out that he's my worst nightmare since 5/6 of the exercises he is doing use a barbell when there are only two decent barbells in the gym, and he's going to be using a m/w/f split. Later he starts deadlifting and making a bit of a racket dropping the bar back to the floor. I thought this was standard, to lower slowly past the knees and then deload quickly, so when some idiot, with earphones no less, starts complaining to him about making so much noise I have to make it two on one and point out that making noise while deadlifting is standard. Idiot says that he's using too much weight, when he's using 90kg, so I ask how he's supposed to get strong without lifting heavy weights and he shuts up eventually. I then get spotted deadlifting without shoes by one of the trainers and reprimanded because it's against safety policy. Leona Lewis pipes up about bad boys soon after, just as I'm about to attempt a deadlift PR so I wait it out till she shuts up. Few minutes later Bieber starts wailing on the radio about teen angst so I use my fingers to press my Tragus into my ears to drown him out for the duration of the song.

looool this one is hilarious. Happened to me a while ago too. "If you have to slam the weights down maybe that's too much weight for you." I pretty much responded the same way, you don't get strong without lifting heavy weights.

Saw some skinny kid in the gym today doing a standard chest workout, except he was going way past failure in every single set for a large number of sets. We are talking like 5 sets of bench and I do not know how many sets of incline/decline, but probably at least 3 each.

Other than the fact his spotter was getting a good workout, I imagine at some point he is doing his muscles more harm than good and severely inhibiting his ability to recover and get stronger. Am I right in this belief, or is there a good logic in doing a large number of sets past failure that I do not know about?
