lol I walked into my current YMCA for my first pickup game and am getting ready to scope out the competition when I see a guy attempt to take a charge and massively flops and pushes himself off the floor to make it more dramatic. He gets up and I see his Dwyane Wade jersey. I about burst out laughing.

1. Call a foul.

OR

2. If this happens once, the next time you screen him, pull a Boris Diaw and turn your body to check him hockey style as he tries to bowl through you.
i think ill be boris diawing him. These games usually have way too many weak fouls called so i don't think calling an off the ball foul will look good. I am complaining about the guy, but honestly i should probably thank him. I find it sort of hard to get all inspired and ultra competitive for random pickup game, but usually when someone tries to "clown" me, it gets the juices flowing again.

Oh fun note from the other day too, i got fouled and was literally bleeding and a guy said "are you calling a foul?" and i just pointed to the blood and threw the ball up top.

lol awesome. I want to try this one time. I think what I will do is wear a Dirk jersey and after I miss like 5 shots in a row, ripoff my jersey, revealing a josh howard jersey.

I may be alone here, but I never call fouls. Ever.

I only call fouls I commit, and expect others to do the same. I don't care how blatant a foul is, if the opposition doesn't call it, I move on. The next play however I will foul that same player as hard or harder. Also I find it 10x more enjoyable to win when I know I never called a foul, i'll sacrifice the occasional game this may cost me no problem.

I also play mostly 1 on 1.

I've been to a ton of them as I've lived in like 8 different places in the Vegas area. And yea, very true...although I think I remember the upstairs one being the best there. Nowadays I go to the Wigwam/Pecos one and the one by the basketball court is far and away the best one there. The one by the men's locker room is horrendous.

The bolded part is ******ed. If you don't want to calls fouls then don't, but don't get upset that they fouled you and didn't call it for you.

It's not that I get upset. It's not that hard to call fouls on yourself, if someone makes a blatant foul and can't call it then I'm going to let them know I disapprove. We agree before the game to call our own fouls, as I said I mostly just play 1 on 1.

Hard fouls are a part of basketball, if you aren't ready for them you probably shouldn't play with anyone who is competitive.

wouldn't a much easier method of letting someone know they fouled you (since people all have widely different interpretations of what a foul is) be saying the word "foul" in a clear, loud voice?

it seems like doing this rather than just attempting to hurt the other person (to "let them know how you feel") would lead to much more pleasant games and a higher likelihood of the offer to play again in the future.

your method actually leads to an increase of violence in your pickup basketball games. i dont understand why you do this.

Understood. It's hard to explain I guess.

Bump.

Okay so my first (ever) first to a gym today.... I lol'd that they sell candy bars/chips/soda. Are people actually doing their work out and then purchasing candy bars, coke and potato chips? I mean I see why they sell Gatorade, even though it is not good for you, people might actually think it will help them with their workout or something misguided like that. But chocolate bars and salty snacks?

I see this guy in his fifties at my gym on Saturday mornings and he's always trying to lift way more weight than he is capable of doing even in his dreams. Example: loads up bar in squat rack with 5 or 6 plates on each side, straps his hands in, grabs the bar, and lifts it an inch or so off the rack bars for one maybe two reps. Or the T-bar with 4 or 5 plates, lifts it off, moves it a bit then sets it back. WTF? I can only guess he's trying to impress someone but he looks like an idiot.

I do something similar in the rack to work on my grip, so I probably look stupid as well. Sounds like he IS stupid though.

There's some tiny little Napoleon-complex guy at my gym whose entire routine consists of strutting around the room for 5 minutes, putting on a belt, quarter-squatting 3 plates in the Smith machine for like 4 reps, and strutting around for another 15 minutes. I don't know whether he's more or less hilarious than the guy who does like 25 different arm and shoulder isolation exercises each and every night.

Why are there so many people with arms much bigger than their thighs? don't they realize they look a little ridiculous... I mean at least wear pants so no one will really notice

had to bump this because this happened to me today, no sir, you cannot "work in" your 65lb barbell curls while I'm squatting.

LOL I love it, they really really want to use the olympic bar with two tiny plates instead of dumbbells or an ez curl.

I always get surprised when I see someone doing deadlifts or even squats, and that person usually seems surprised to see me doing the same. Like "what? You're not doing bench 5 days/week?"

Most of the PTs at my gym are quite good, (in great shape and know what they are going) but there are two that make me laugh when they wear shorts instead of pants. They both are quite big/cut from the waist up but they have tiny legs. Its hilarious, I can't help but burst out laughing every time I see them. One of them has calves not much bigger than my forearm (I'm not big, 5'10, 175 12%BF).
