Given my extensive sample size of two (you and me), I can conclude that being Asian makes you sweat like a stuck hog.

I was always under the assumption that Asian people in general:

-Smaller
-Less body hair
-Sweat less
-Less BO

Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but this is the prejudice I have developed due my own personal experiences.

Disclaimer: By Asian I am referring specifically to Oriental Asian.

Kyle has made the common methodological error of not controlling for endogenous plurality of "urban," "emo," and "hipster."

Do you feel the stereotype is invalid, or you are an exception?

I dunno. I was mainly joking. Thremp has commented in the past that he sweats a lot, and I also have this same trait. I used to sweat heavily while playing Counter-Strike, FFS.

I'm also only 50% Japanese. Other 50% is pure cracker ass white boy (Irish).

there is actually a thread in SMP right now discussing why asians tend to have less BO (there is science behind it!)

Please summarize. I'm not going to that forum.

Though my BO is pretty rank if I don't control it using OLD SPICE.

This behavior pattern promotes variability of the immune system of individuals in the population, thus making the population more robust against new diseases.

A recent study suggests that body odor is genetically determined by a gene that also codes the type of earwax one has.[4][5] East Asians (those of Chinese, Japanese and Korean descent) have the type of sweat glands which even after hitting puberty still don't produce the chemicals found in the perspiration of other ancestral groups. East Asians evidently have a greater chance of having the 'dry' earwax type and reduced axial sweating and odor. This may be due to adaptation to colder climates.[6]
so there you go. having asian genes doesnt auto mean you dont smell, but makes it more likely.

Theres a corollary between sodium intake and sweating right?

I think genetics is the most important factor in propensity to sweat. I was recently reading a tennis article on ESPN website where they were discussing how certain tennis players (ie Federer) have an inherent advantage because they are less prone to sweat.

In addition to sweat making the racket slippery, scientific evidence has demonstrated that excessive sweating causes transient loss of total water volume, leading to a decrease in athletic performance and cognitive ability.

For the record, I think they are referring to a serious loss of water over a prolonged time, ie playing a cardiovascular intensive sport in 90 degree weather for 4 hours straight. Even for those of us prone to sweat, I am sure the amount of sweating undertaken in a 1 hr SS workout is not close to compromising performance.

6 feet, fairly hairy, do not sweat much, but i can become pretty smelly.

i think the stereotype is still pretty valid, as like kyle i am only half chinese. but at least he kinda looks the part, all i've got is the eyes.

6' 4", not hairy, sweat probably a little less than average, probably a little less smelly than average. So. . . I have no idea what that means. But I'm not short, and I'm 100% Chinese. Probably an exception rather than the rule, truthfully.

My experience with sweaty asians is not pleasant, as teaching golf outside in the summer in Houston led to a lot of horrid experiences. Granted, these were all 40+ year old men w/ old-school hygiene habits, it was still pretty ****ing disgusting at times.

OT but I need a quick answer to a question about Starting Strength:

I had day 1 on Monday, was sore the day after, but went hiking with some light unassisted rock climbing on Tuesday

Supposed to go in for workout B today (squat, power clean, standing press) but I'm still really sore.

Questions are, I'm still supposed to go in whether I'm sore or not, right? And should I really not be hiking on rest days?

If you enjoy hiking then by all means do it. Yes it will probably interfere a bit with recovery but that shouldn't be too much of a problem early on anyways. Soreness shouldn't be a deterrent to working out again. I would probably do deadlifts again on day 2 until you get the form down right. And when you start learning cleans, learn them from the hang position first.
