Date of test?
I favor running lots of mileage at 9 1/2 to 10 minutes a mile. Don't even attempt to run 1 1/2 miles in 12 minutes until the day of the test.
How is the test conducted? Many runners on the track or must you run alone? If there's 10 to 15 runners it should be easy to pass the test. Find someone running the right pace. Follow him. If you're the lone runner, then it's tough. Also tough if too many are on the track.
Basic training. 8 weeks. Recruits never ran faster than 12 minutes a mile in training. Always ran in formation. Yet 75-80% of recruits easily beat 8 minutes for the mile and we ran in army boots.
