I left eggs out about 5 hours ago, will they be ok to eat, or should I throw them out? How long can they be left out?

Each hour at room temp is equivalent to a day in the refrig. They should be fine unless they were very close to expiring.

Eggs have a pretty long ass shelf life; What Jeff W said is true too.

I remember doing an experiment with eggs about 2 years ago where my professor left them out for a WEEK. They were actually still edible after being cooked which was very surprising.

I live in the middle east. The 'corner store' type shops have eggs just laying around on the shelves and it's often around 100 degrees. To date they haven't gotten me.

I leave eggs out (I'm a "euro")... I normally eat my eggs quick because I like eggs, but I'm happy to eat them even after 2 or 3 weeks or more if needs be. Just give them a sniff when you crack them, its pretty easy to tell if they have gone bad.

My mother in law has eggs even longer than this and she doesn't seem to have any problems.

Seriously though, 5 hours out of the fridge, I think you'll b ok.

I've left them out for a week and they have been fine.

However, professional chefs generally cook with ones that are fresh and refrigerated. For one thing, fresh hard-boiled eggs are easier to peel and sometimes have a better colored yolk.

I just realized what a dumbo I am. how come eggs don't turn into chickens?

They are not fertilized. You are eating a chicken's period, not its baby.

Wow that's pretty gross I'm never eating eggs again!

o.k. maybe not but I did have a question if the date on my eggs is past do I throw em out or crack and sniff? Or is there something you can tell just by looking at them?

Edit: So caviar is fish period right? And now I can tell those tree huggers to STFU when they say "Everytime you eat an egg it's an abortion!!"

eggs dont need to be refrigerated. supermarkets here just keep them on normal non-fridge shelves and i keep them in the pantry for weeks at a time with no problems.

Yeah, think it'll be fine, I think it's just American's phobia against raw and unrefrigerated things.

Just a note on leaving eggs out or storing them a long time. When you do that, of course don't be cracking them into anything but an empty bowl! I ruined one or two things doing that before, big preparation/ingredients totally hosed because of a bad egg cracked into it. Damn did I feel stupid.

Yes, you should be able to crack the egg into a separate bowl and see differences in yolk and white. The yolk will lose color - not that a lot of supermarket eggs have color to begin with. It will also get wrinkly. The white will get runny and lose its form. But even with these signs of degradation, they can still be good to eat.

Supermarket eggs are unfertilized, but you can buy fertilized eggs from a farmer and incubate your own chicks. Or you could eat the fertilized eggs with no ill effects. Chickens who are laying eggs act different than chickens who set on eggs to hatch them. Farmers know the difference and do not leg even fertilized eggs sit around.

Some people believe the fertilized eggs are healthier. I don't know. But one thing that is true is that if you have hens, they will be stressed if there is not a rooster around - so it is to the benefit of the farmer to have a rooster for every 8-12 laying hens or so.

I saw on a tv show that you shouldnt put eggs in the refredgerator because they can absorb the flavors of the stuff in your fridge. I store them in a fridge but you should be able to store them out of a fridge unless it is really hot or cold.

Yeah, if it is cold out you definitely want to store your eggs in the fridge.
