Thanks, man!

A little update on that: It did not seem to bother me benching Sunday, but as my muscles tightened up yesterday, I had that familiar pain between my spine and left shoulder blade while I was sitting. This is caused by the nerve in my neck getting pinched. Its nothing to be too concerned about, but I was a bit concerned that DLing might make it worse. I was hopeful DLing would make it better.

As usual, DLing made it better. That pain while I sit is gone today. DLs are awesome.

speed bench
45x15
95x10
135x7
185x5
225x3
245x3
265x3
275x3
295x3 - My left shoulder shrugged up on the third rep. This is exactly the thing I need to avoid, so I shut this down.

3 board press
275x3
295x3
315x2
I am weak at benching right now. Back in late Feb., before the neck issue, I doubled 4 plates off 3 boards, and that was after doing several heavy triples.

cable rows
150x15x2

face pulls

240x5
330x3

briefs
420x2

suit, straps down
510x1

straps up
600x1
It took a while to hit depth. I had the straps on too tight.

knee wraps
670x1
I got the weight a bit forward from the bottom. I got my hips forward to correct it, but it was a bit of a grind coming up.

After this set, I bent over taking my suit and briefs off to take a leak. When I was bending over, something felt funny with my low back, so I shut down squatting for the night. I must have done something on the last squat rep. It does not seem like anything major, but I think putting 730 on my back then doing secondary work, which was the plan, would have been a bad idea.

I was sick with some kind of upper respiratory thing, so I didnt lift Sunday. I felt mostly better yesterday, so I figured I'd give DLing a try.

DL
225x5x2
315x3x2
405x2

My sinuses felt like they were about to explode on that last one, so I stopped.

bench press
45x15
95x10
135x10
185x5
225x3
275x1

loose two ply shirt
3 board press
405x1 - fast
455x1 - slow. I pressed it straight up instead of arcing it towards my head. Form had something to do with it going slow, but arm weakness and remnants of being sick had more to do with it.

Having pushed myself to something difficult, and not wanting to get sicker, I rested for about an hour, then did a few rows and face pulls, followed by a bunch of tall kneeling PNF D2 flexions and a bunch of half kneeling cable lifts. Both of those always make me feel like I've got my torso and hips aligned well.

This was good form and good depth. I was sort of planning to attempt 730 after this, but I was having trouble breathing through my nose and felt a little worn out due to having been sick, so I shut it down. Hopefully I can push myself a little harder Sunday.

The back tweak from last week is not an issue.

This is about as much as I've done raw in ~2 months.

size 54 two ply shirt
405x1 - very fast & easy. Good form.
455x1 - fast & easy. Not good form apparently though.
495x1 - slow and ugly.

raw, two board press
325x3 - ok
335x3 - I got somewhat loose and it was hard. I was spent after this. Some of my strength is coming back, but I am a long ways from where I was a couple months ago before the neck issue.

225x3
245x3
265x3 all these were under 3.5 seconds
285x3x2 these were between 3.5 - 4 seconds, which is a bit slow. I was doing 315 x 3 in under 3.5 seconds before the neck issue. My bench strength is coming back, but I'm a long ways from being where I was a couple months ago.

2 board press
315x3 - ok, but I was getting worn out
305x3x2

This was pretty easy. I can increase weight next time.

These felt good. I can probably go back to 135x15x3 next time.

I'm guessing this puny bar weighs ~50 lbs, but idk for sure

Do you wear gear with Trap Bar DL?
cha59's log Quote
05-28-2016 , 11:32 AM
Good question. I wore briefs last night. I should have noted that.

I usually wear briefs for secondary squat & DL work. It protects my hips and gives me a little bit of the feel of lifting in gear. Since my geared lifting form is most important, I need to work on that. Especially DLs. Its easy to fall out of the groove if I'm not working on my geared DL form enough because gear tends to push you forward from the start on DLs. Staying back is hard.

General strength building for both squats and DLs. I used to do a lot more of them. I think doing them very heavy helped me get that 705 lb DL, and I havent done them for a long time, and my DL is not as high as it was several months ago. I'm considering bringing my trap bar to the gym so I can fit some more weight on it. That puny bar could barely hold 700.

I haven't done them in years. I was thinking it might be a good/quicker way to get more weight on the bar and tax CNS.
