Re: Boxing

If you keep fighting as an adult what weight do you think you would end up at (cutting to get there on fight night obv)?

It seems like you are heading into that no man's land where you are going to be a very small heavyweight, but too big for any other weight class. I looked up boxing weight classes and cruiserweight limit is 90.7 kg, which is not going to be fun to cut to if you are 6'4" and already pushing 205 walking around weight at 17 years old.

Not sure where I'll end up, but if I finish up at 6'5" or 6'6" don't see any problems fighting at HW at easily over 240+.

Am basically not going to cut much any more and just get to where nature intended. Will maybe cut a little bit like for this fight to get to 195 or so but moreso that'll just be from straight up cardio calorie burning. Not so much restricting food.

Have spent pretty much my whole career to date staving to make weight for fights and divisions. And never realized how much it messes with your head until recently.

One week into training camp and am leaving the kitchen one night at 3 am, sneaking up the stairs and my dad sees me and asks, "What's up?"

"Nothing!"

"Do you seriously have food hidden under your shirt?"

"Yes...." Still trying to hide a ham sandwich and twinkie.

"You realize you don't have to starve any more right?"

"I got no idea what the hell I'm doing!"

Re: Boxing

Meant to ask you Snitch about your accident. Looked around a bit but couldn't find any info on it. Was it on your motorcycle? I was looking at buying one last year but FTP took that off the table for me.

Hitting a few bumps and lumps in the training. Last week hurt my foot and had to take about 3 days off...playing basketball. This week my wrist playing soccer. Think i might have to cut the extra curricular stuff out to avoid the set backs. Not even sure why I play them as I totally sux at those sports, but they are fun.

Re: Boxing

Broke my wrist. Re: from the above post playing soccer. 8 weeks in a cast. So much for my fight this month on the 26th, and training for a while.

Re: Boxing

Get cast off on June 14th. Hope recovery time isn't too long. My club had our show this weekend. Was a great show, but pretty damn tough watching from the sidelines. Just wanna punch someone, anyone in the face sooooo badly.

Proud of our crew though, for their efforts as they all have stepped up their training and finally realized that 1/2 this game is conditioning and having the cardio to finish strong. Heart will go a long way in the ring...but your lungs are more often then not the deciding factor.

Good to hear from you. Not around here much anymore (spend most online time at reddit tbh)...but stop in just to see what's up with FTP. Plus figure will keep the time line going on this thread to look back on.

Hope all is well with ya, skunkbro!

Re: Boxing

So. Got cast off last week. Bone doc says 6 more weeks no hitting **** and I understand why. Having started working out (cardio mostly), even throwing punches at the air makes a clickity I could snap on you any time sound and feeling.

Still, hoping to get a fight before the summer ends. Have some friends down in Vegas who are training at a fairly high level. In both boxing and MMA. The amateur boxing federation (AIBA) just passed a rule which will allow those wanting to pursue the Olympics, with fighting professionally. It's been a pretty big stumbling block for years, and for many. Kept a lot of people from going pro....some their entire careers, RE: most any one from Cuba, and then some.

Re: Boxing

I just started boxing and my trainer suggested that I buy 16 oz gloves, but I will only do mitt/bag work(no sparring/fighting because I can't risk brain trauma). Isn't it more appropriate for me to use a 12 oz glove as an all-purpose glove?

Read post # 706 for a bit of a break down on purchasing gloves.

I would say if you want lighter gloves and never intend to spar, then sure a lighter weight is okay. But also remember an important consideration when purchasing is protection of hands. The weight of the glove is defined by the amount of padding. More weight = more padding.

I would think the perfect weight in your sit. for most people is probably 14oz. This based on averages. Obv if you weigh 300 lbs and hit like a horse, your hands require more protection. If you are 100 lbs than less.

I am in the Philippines and it is tough to find quality gloves here despite the popularity of boxing. I can get Lonsdale Super Pros for ~$135 and Twins brand, but I can't try the Twins on before ordering.

I will go with 16 oz gloves on my coach's rec. I'm sure he's looking out for my hand health since I'm a big guy with power. My only concern is locating the punches on the index/middle finger knuckles with the bigger glove. It just feels somewhat unwieldy.

Re: Boxing

Ya sounds like a good plan. If you are heavier and have power then better with the added protection. I've seen some really big guys wearing up to 20's. Wouldn't worry too much about the feel, you'll get used to them quickly enough. Not too familiar with Lonesdale but I've heard decent things about them, typically from people abroad. Looked up those particular gloves and they appear a decent quality.

Good luck in your boxing training and keep us posted to how it goes!

Re: Boxing

Wrist now officially healed. Still will be a while until back to 100%. Started training this week, but going to stay away from intensive boxing (punching) training and keep it MMA with limited striking then ease back in. Wasn't much in the way of rehab, just a few minor mobility exercises, rotating wrist etc done daily. Lost 15 lbs not training. Just not hungry. Expect to put that right back on.

Also just took up a full time job for the summer which is labor intensive, so I think this will help too in overall conditioning instead of just pushing piles of paper around or w/e. Hopefully get a fight set up in a few months. See how it goes I suppose.

Re: Boxing

First week of training, and it is painfully obvious that having a few months off with zero workouts that a body can lose a lot. In muscle, coordination, and who knows what else, but lots. It probably doesn't help having one arm look like it is from the cover of a Popeye cartoon and the other a withered dying tree limb.

With any luck, hopefully it comes back quick. This, from my longest complete layoff ever.
