Ah man that is so lame. I am not sure if the LCL is worse or better compared to a ACL, I do know it is much more rare. You will need surgery. Don't listen to anyone that says you can live without it, and it will heal on its own good enough. Sure you will be able to walk around and do normal stuff, but you will hate your life when you try anything athletic. My surgery where my body rejected my ACL, I was so mad and frustrated and went without a ACL for a year and a half. I lived a normal life except I was not able to do any real sports and just snapped one day and got it all fixed again. I got meniscus repaired and a full ACL replacement, did all the rehab and started BJJ a year later and am so glad I got it all over with.

Really sucks man, but it happens to top athletes as well and just got to bite the bullet and get it fixed. Hope it all works out.

hi guys, just noticed this thread and thought i would start posting in it. As am taking up BJJ this year and really pumped about learning it properly and nailing some of the technique, never rly done any grappling or anything like that before.

Just feel like its something I should do - not really interested at competing at a serious level or anything like that - just want to pickup the basics really quickly and then carry on as a hobby. Sorry to hear about the injury matrat, hope all goes well with your recovery. I've been sidelines soo much in the past so I def feel your pain.

I slightly pulled my neck/right shoulder in training a week ago, it hurt for 2-3 days and pain was gone after that.

But i just noticed my right arm lost considerable strength. Can barely curl 1/2 of left arm, and leaning ridiculously to one side when doing chin-ups. Arm strength was very close to even just a week ago.

Anyone here ever experienced something like that before? Should i see a doc?

even though this thread does not get updated as much as I would like I think we should limit injury discussion a little bit. Maybe if you get hurt bad you can post but if you are doing bjj you are always hurt.

If you decide you want to get good at bjj you are going to be constantly injured. maybe not big things like acl or torn shoulders etc, but you are going to always have something hurt.

Agreed, as long as its within reason. That said plexiq get it checked out, strength loss is strange.

Another tournament coming up next month put on by the same people. I would have to start cutting weight now, and meh I just don't feel like rush jobbing and weight cut and getting back into shape for a tournament in just over 3 weeks. I wasn't prepared for the last one, and I wont be for this one. I got a email from my instructor saying they are going to probably test me for my blue next time the black belt comes to town, so I think I will focus on that and go get my ass kicked at the blue belt level in competitions. More fun that way.

Now some content! This guy has been putting these videos the last little while and they are great little refreshers and general outlines.

Sure, but I don't think it's bad if it's someone asking a question. I lost my hearing for like 3 weeks after grappling. I'm pretty sure my coach perforated my eardrum on accident. That was kinda scary. Anyway, sometimes injuries are weird and you want confirmation that they're standard.

I DON'T WANT ANYONE WHINING ABOUT BROKEN TOES THO

Had a awesome no gi class tonight, my wrestling is really starting to feel like it coming along. I hit a north south choke from the mount tonight, like grabbed the neck and backstepped off to the choke and got the finish, been wanting to do that one for awhile. I really need to get back into shape though, time to stop the bulk I think and cut. Also I put up a video of me hitting the pads in the striking thread if you wanna see me look like a noob at something.

Just started sparring bjj and I have a distinct weight advantage over the students which frustrates me a little as I don't know if I'm actually doing well or just getting into good spots due to my weight advantage.

Also I'm finding that I'm getting into the mount quite easily versus some opponents but then struggling to submit - anyone got any simple submissions from the mount that are easy to practise without a partner??? Cheers

Try the Americana. It's easy and there is little risk of losing the position. Or cross choke if you train with gi.

Armbar is probably the most popular sub from mount, but if you don't hit it you will lose position a lot.

Americana seems to be the big guy go to move. Do you get to roll with decent guys that cant actually give you trouble as well?

Thanks man, I'll check out some you tube instructional vids on those and rinse the technique solo x100 ready for next session. We do gi and no gi, I need to buy a gi to be honest. Going to just get a cheap top gi to start with...

Well gassing is a problem at the mo, typically we spar for anywhere between 15-30mins... 5min sparring and swap partners but I gas like a bitch after the first bout at the moment whilst im trying to get my fitness/weight to a decent level.

But yeah I'm getting owned by some guys and then finding that i am able to dominant some others quite easily when jockeying for position but then struggling due to lack of options/knowledge what the next step should be. Still waitin on my first submission as well!! hopefully it'll be one of the few that you guys have mentioned. If you know of any great instructional vids on above then pls post links - Cheers for the help

I'm a little guy that rolls a lot with bigger opponents and the moves they most often get me with is Americanas and Arm Triangles from top position. These work well for the big guy I think because you can force the position using your strength. Just be careful to not get too used to strong-arming your way into submissions though because when you start to roll with guys that are your size, that suddenly won't work any more.

I haven't grappled in a few months and wanted to try an arm triangle on a girl friend who trains. I was pretty drunk. We were on carpet.

The scabbing was so much worse. This happened a full month ago. It's finally looking normal again.

So the crazy good judo girl I always talk about at my club, her family is friends with a woman who was on the Australian Olympic wrestling team, and her husband, who is from the Ukraine I believe was the coach for their Olympic team. They have been meaning to come and check out the club, and now are going to try and throw some pure wrestling classes, first class this Saturday right after BJJ. Super hyped on this.

Got x-ray of neck/spine and a nerve velocity conduction test, both not showing any problem. Doc said i can keep training normal. Reading up on similar cases on the net is freaking me out though, seems there is some chance that the strength loss is permanent :/

Having a pretty hard time adjusting to it, just noticing now how much i rely on that strength to apply shoulder pressure in half guard/side control.

Been having a lot of good seshions lately, really starting to feel things click.

I got nothing else to add, so here is a video of me lifting something up and then putting it down.

I'd probably lift barefoot and not bend your back as much. 355 is sick though. GO TRT!!

Yea I was lifting for awhile in running shoes not knowing the difference, wore those shoes because they are pretty flat. My DL has gotten a lot better, but my posture is just terrible and I round a lot regardless. Nice power cleans btw.

Thanks. My form got a little sloppy near the end with the heavier weights. My shoulders were too far ahead of the bar, causing me to swing back on my pull, rather than lift straight up and explode out of it. I also rounded my back a little. :-/

lol i didnt watch the end before but thats pretty funny

bought a cup and mouthpiece gonna try a class and see how it goes, only thing im worried about is my shoulders holding up esp in bjj

theres two places im considering since they r closest to me, i assume i should take a sample class at each. what should i look for? one uses gi for BJJ and eduardo de lima is the head BJJ instructor but he works at like 4 diff mma gyms around here so im skeptical of how much time hes there. other gym is no gi and has an octagon, shane dunn is the coach. not as many classes on the schedule but that may not be updated. both mainly focus on bjj and some muay thai w some mma classes. ive been puttin off goin to a class for years excited to finally do it
