Should I do SS without health insurance? Should I do SS without health insurance?

So I'm seriously thinking about starting a SS program, I got the book and read through most of it.

On page 310, Rippetoe talks about how you will be sore, and at some point you wil get injured. That got me thinking, for someone without health insurance (I play poker for a living and don't have it), how safe is it to do SS? Getting a serious injury would really screw me financially, and getting health insurance is ridiculously expensive.

Keep in mind I'm a complete beginner (I've never done a bench press in my life). I'm not a total fat tub of goo (I'm 6'0, 180), but I'm certainly no physical specimen either. I've been working out on my own with dumbbells for the past 2 months, I have made some gains, but obviously nothing compared to what can be accomplished doing SS.

So to the experts and guys doing SS in this forum, would you recommend SS for someone like me? And if so, would you recommend any modifications to the program? Thanks.

Yeah. I don't really see a way for you to get seriously injured on ss. There might be minor things that would cost small medical fees, but probably no crazy back surgeries that costs thousands of dollars. You'd have to be ****ing ******ed to get injured that badly.

this.

there's definitely a trend for doctors to be way less knife-happy when it comes to sports injuries. This is ceratinly the case for spinal disc ruptures. They did some statistical analysis and turns out the rate of recovery in surgical patients vs non-surgical was about the same.

Although you will require rehab, but that might not even be covered in most packages

Just don't squat or deadlift at all. Everyone knows it's bad for your knees. ACtually, no, just don't get out of bed at all. If you don't have insurance you can't go to a doctor at all and they'll just let you die in the lobby. It happened to my friend once. You better just go into a coma until you get some insurance, staying awake in bed might actually result in injury too.

insurance is nice for physical therapy if you tweak something, which is not hard to do if you're mentally ******ed like me or very stiff. but then again, every exercise i was taught in physical therapy is available on the cressey/robertson/etc sites. so i guess you don't really need insurance for that, which means i didn't really need to write this post. this is how you get to 11,000+ posts, people.

why would ripptoe say "you will get injured" im 23 and have done the SS exercises since i was 16. i didnt start SS until 2 months ago but have always done the exercises and i have never been injured working out in my life.

if you use proper form, know what u can lift why would he suggest getting injured is unavoidable?

Because invariably at some point in your training career, you will do something stupid and injure yourself. Whether this is due to blunt force trauma (dropping a weight on your foot) or arrogance (trying to set new 1RMs when you probably should not), it happens to the best of us. We're only human.

the vast majority of injuries do not require professional medical attention.

Its like the vast majority of illnesses don't require medical attention. Your chance of getting the common cold >>>>>>> sleeping sickness.

You would really have to **** up and like Kyle said drop something on your foot or let your ego get ahead of yourself to seriously injure yourself. You are more likely to develop some strains or pains that will just require some rest and rehab and probably form correction.

How expensive can health insurance be? Even a few hundred bucks a month (no idea about US prices) should be worth it for your peace of mind, and if thats a major financial burden perhaps full-time poker isnt the smartest option?
