So I just found out I'm officially lactose intolerant. I mean, I've known for years that milk/dairy gives me cramps and I've largely avoided it, but I had some blood tests done recently which confirmed intolerance.

I've been training for 5 years and have experimented with lactose-free WPI (didn't help much), rice protein and pea protein. Obv I refuse soy-protein cos I quite like being a guy.

I'm suspicious of any non-dairy protein powder and have difficulty believing that any of them are even in the same ballpark as WPI, but given that WPI is now out for good I might as well find out what the best substitute is.

Does anyone have any advice/opinion regarding the best non-dairy powders? Preferably backed by science/research/credible articles. Links would be great.

There's products like egg protein and beef protein powders that you can use. I don't have any articles, but egg powder was used before whey was commercially available.

What whey protein isolate did you use?

If it was a good quality product with minimal/no lactose then you could be looking at a dairy protein allergy on top of the lactose intolerance.

Pretty sure all the talk about soy protein is just bro-science.

Trueprotein.com has a number of egg protein powders that should also suffice. Also, like mentioned above, a quality WPI shouldn't really cause problems.

There's a lot of evidence that indicates that high levels of soy protein in one's diet leads to depressed testosterone levels. The 2007 Goodin et. al. study was poorly done, but there's plenty more to back up the general point.

I've never been diagnosed for lactose intolerance but milk does mess me up too, gas, diarrhea, etc.

I used ON Gold Standard WPI with water, which does contain some lactase. I'm not a doctor but lactase is different from lactose and I'm not sure it would cause a reaction since lactase breaks down lactose. I never got diarrhea or anything from it. You might want to try out a small package of it before buying a huge tub though.

I want to try shakes with milk so I think I'm gonna try lactaid and see if it makes the shakes taste better.

Also, someone here posted about Digestive Advantage which seems to be a daily supplement that helps with lactose intolerance. They said Rippetoe suggested it, so maybe you want to look into that. I've never taken it though so I can't give any info on it besides that.

I've used high-quality WPI and a good quality lactose-free WPI and neither of them sat very well. I didn't realise there was a difference between lactose intolerance and dairy protein allergy, I thought they were all the same thing. I'll have to look into that, thanks.

[Edit - I just looked at the report and it says Allergies: Cows milk. Kind of broad but possibly includes dairy protein]

Does anyone know how these different non-dairy proteins compare? In order of superiority I'm thinking Egg, Beef, Rice, Pea?

Last question, does beef protein taste like beef? Or is it more or less neutral and can be flavoured like a normal powder?

Me to, I cant eat a lot of cheese/etc, but with protien powder, if you "chew" the shake as you drink it, it helps to pre-break down things before it hits your stomach, so you dont get the runs, and sulfur farts

What about Milk Protein Isolate? IIRC it's "nearly" lactose free.

It's not that hard to get sufficient protein from real food(in the past I did 240+ g protein/day on an 1800 cal diet).

I used to use egg protein way back in the day, and it gave me terrible gas. I'm not lactose intolerant, so I figure it wasn't the milk I was drinking it with. But seriously, rotten dead animal farts.

I use ON Nutrition's "Gold Standard 100% Whey". It has a few digestive enzymes in it, including Lactase. Also, digestive advantage is a must if you're lactose intolerant:
