THese are the only things I snack on. I bought Emerald varieties, like roasted almond, cocoa almonds and salt&pepper cashews. For the last month I have been eating close to a half pound a day, this is in addition to my 1800-2000 low carb, hi protein, some fat calories per day. Am i taking in too much fat via nuts?

what am i reading the labels for? They're pretty standard nutritionally among the nut family, just wondering if too many nuts is bad.

Well if you are trying to stick to 1800-2000 cal a day there is going to be a slight problem.

Not worried about the extra calories, and not to debate the merits of a high fat low carb diet. Just wondering if eating a half to almost a pound of nuts a day, in of itself, would be considered healthy.

Other then the extra cals and fat they are fine. I think he's asking if to much nuts could be possibly bad for your health, Like drinking to much soda would seriously damage your health. I mean if you eat 15lbs of nuts a day you might see some bad effects, but if your snacking on them every day your good to go

I seem to remember some variety of nut has fairly high levels of some heavy metal. (I hope its not almonds, because I eat a lot of them too, so tasty)

You could be taking in an awful lot of sodium I suppose, but nuts are certainly better than most snack foods.

fat from nuts are fine, in fact they are good for you.

You might want to look into the salt content though. Maybe try to keep them as plain as possible to keep the additives to a minimum.

From the sound of your diet, you shouldn't worry too much about fats. You should be taking in a decent amount of oily fats and nuts fall into this category.

raw organic or local macadamia nuts I eat nonstop. Sometimes will sprinkle my own salt/seasoning on them but they're delicious as is. most nuts are extremely healthy provided they're of good quality. Also, they're best to be eaten alone as a snack or with a large salad.

When evaluating a food item or group, it's good to look at the macronutritional profile and then micronutrient nuance.

So, for nuts:

Macro: They are generally have high caloric density (this is neither good or bad*). While it varies with the specific nut, P/C/F split is about 15/13/72 (almonds).

* None of this makes it good or bad in a vacuum. It depends on how they fit within your total nutritional framework (total cals, and basic macro targets). So nuts can be incredibly useful to get in some calories, to balance your fat intake, and as a snacking substitute (within the limits set forth previously). On the other hand, no matter how "healthy" you think nuts are, if you're on a restrictive PSMF (god forbid), eating a large bowl of nuts is likely gonna take you way over your limit (total cal and likely fat).

Micro and other considerations:
> Reasonable way of getting in some fiber
> Some might have allergies and small intolerances
> Satiety quotient is OK- likely better than cookies, and worse than eggs

Sometimes when I'm hungry and want to take the edge off, I'll grab a small handful of pistachios (in the shell). Shelling them and eating them one at a time forces me to eat them slowly so I'm not stuffing my face with a huge number at once. When I'm done, I find that the edge has been taken off my hunger for a while and I've only eaten maybe 100-150 calories. But if you give me a can of roasted almonds, I can scarf through that in no time.
