So I'm getting a nagging pain in all those areas I'm pointing to in the pics. The first pic it's the bone region right beside the trap muscle. The pain is in my right shoulder. I'm pretty sure it stemmed from when I was training about 3 weeks ago and I was squatting low bar but had the uprights set too high...this resulted in me having to reach up with my right side to rack my heavy work set. I can recall feeling a strain in my shoulder when this happened. To make matters worse I benched after and felt uncomfortable with 145. I decided to try my 195 work set anyway which I had previously gotten 2 x 5 on and wasn't even able to get 1 rep.

I took a week off from training hoping the uncomfortableness would go away but it didn't. I did a light workout when I returned to the gym and I actually OHp'd and without much discomfort (although wasn't able to press for as many reps as usual) , but refrained from Deadlifting that day. On my last ohp set and rep though i lowered the bar in an uncontrolled manner much to quickly and I felt the strain going down my arm so that might have prolonged this nagging pain. I took another week off after this session and once again the pain did not completely disappear. I trained this past monday and was able to train through it, however once again my press was harder..maybe it was just cause of fear of this pain when pressing but i was only able to get 135 - 3/3/2 when I was able to get 135 x 3 x 5 pretty easily before this.

I'll feel a sharp, yet almost tingly type pain anywhere down the middle of the arm between the 2nd and 3rd pics, mostly i get it in those areas i'm pointing to. I've done a bit of the 1st shoulder stretch shown in this video - . I don't think it's really helped. A lot of time's I'll just be sitting on my computer and I'll feel some mild pain in the areas in those pics. I was able to do a semi-light chest workout DB pressing today and it didn't hurt that much while i was pressing the pain pretty much just comes randomly, eg. as i type this I'm feeling some pain in the area shown in the 2nd pic. I'm just scared that this may potentially lead to a somewhat serious injury.

Talk to 5 different doctors they tell you 5 different things imo. Would honestly trust a credible member of H&F before I trust my family doc wrt this pain.

im not a credible member of this forum. however, i think its just a combo of bursitis/tendonitis, which can be set in motion from just one instance. you risk a slap tear reracking the weight like you did, but slap tears or labrum tears are much more painful and are felt deeper in the shoulder.

I've had a lot of shoulder issues in both shoulders. I've learned a lot over the past several years, especially over the past year, about what's best for me.

I dont know exactly what your issue is, but I would avoid doing heavy lifting that makes it hurt if I were you. Also I think you should stop overhead pressing for now.

If it continues and you do decide to see a doctor, I would run like hell if they suggest surgery as the best option.

There's a chance its a minor tendon/nerve/muscle issue. If that's the case and the MD diagnoses it correctly, he'll probably put you on NSAIDs and maybe muscle relaxers and tell you to stop working out. Then he'll prescribe physical therapy, which will not likely do very much.

If I had your symptoms, I'd see my chiropractor first to see what he thinks. I wouldn't just see any chiro. Mine is trained at the highest level of both ART and Graston Techinques. Its likely that he'd be able to fix it using one or both of those. I also trust him to tell me if he thought I needed an orthopedist to examine me. I dont know if this would be best for you or not, because I cant recommend one I trust unless you're in the Minneapolis area - then I would recommend my guy.

One thing I would recommend is this program:
http://www.rotatorcuff.net/shop/item.asp?itemid=10

This guy successfully treats people like professional and college level baseball players. He recommends no overhead pressing when you're having shoulder pain, and no bench pressing with a barbell (dumbell bench pressing is ok once you get back to normal).

I recently laid off barbell bench pressing for ~4 months and did some workouts from the Buchberger program, along with a lot of other shoulder rehab type work, and dumbell benching, plus several ART and Graston sessions with my chiro. When I started bench pressing again, it took me about 2 workouts to get back to the level I was at before, and my shoulders feel a lot better.

cha - I saw a chiro earlier this week who works out of my gym a couple of days a week. Forgot precisely what he told me he thought the issue was, but he suggested ART, a spinal adjustment but only if I wanted one, and acupuncture. Do you think I should just try one session with the ART? Here's his profile..

I mean this was my first time consulting with a chiro, but I can't exactly say I felt assured he would be able to help my problem when speaking with him..but perhaps that's just me being too skeptical.

I dont have an opinion on acupuncture.

It looks like he has a few ART certifications, which is good. He is not certified at the same level as my guy, but he might still be good at it, I dont know. I'd guess if he does ART on you, you'll probably feel better. I think that would be hard to mess up, but I'm sure some people are better than others with it.

After my first ART session, I immediately felt a lot better. I'd say give that a shot if you can afford it. You'll know if its worth doing again after a session.

Regarding the spinal adjustment - I've been to several competent chiros. I would trust any of the ones I know to adjust me. I know there are some incompetent ones out there. Those people give the profession a bad name. I cant offer advice on this particular guy, but if he's a CSCS and certified at 3 levels of ART, he's obviously been studying something useful. Use your own judgment as far as that goes.

The chiros who are certified at the biomechanical level are the ones best qualified to work with athletes.

btw, that Buchberger program I linked in my previous post was recommended to me by my chiro.

Haha, so soliciting medical advice over the internet is going to garner better results? I think you have magical shoulder pain fairies putting a curse on your left shoulder. Go to your family doc and get a referral to an orthopod FFS.

I've had good results with soliciting medical advice over the internet. Do you go to the doctor for every tummy ache? Why would joint pain be different?

Why would joint pain be different than tummy aches? I don't know. Probably because tummy aches are not the same as 3 weeks of shoulder pain with radiating "tingliness" which sounds a lot like a nerve injury. Sure would be a shame if OP had some sort of impinged nerve resultant of whatever injury he has that leaves him with chronic weakness in his left arm. If I'm ever having chest pain tho, I'll be sure to PM you first.

No problem. I'll tell you to take some Pepto since its probably heartburn.

Alright thanks. I'm gonna go for an ART session with him within the next week or two and see how that goes. I did a light WO saturday and was dumbell pressing and it was manageable but I'd get a lot of the pain when I was not doing a lift. It started getting kinda bad and it would hurt quite a bit through my shoulder/upper arm when I was putting back and taking the DB's off of the rack.

I also began getting the same type of pain in my left shoulder but only the area in picture 1. Today the pain was by far worse than ever. I played basketball banged around a bit and it got pretty agonizing once I stopped playing for about the next hour and a half or so in both shoulders (pic 1) but more so in my right shoulder.

Cha the link for the buchberger program you gave me in your previous post ain't working.

This doesn't sound good. I wouldn't be doing any type of overhead or pressing stuff if I were you. I'd be pretty conservative about doing anything (pulling or pushing) until you get that thing looked at.

http://www.rotatorcuff.net/

If that link doesn't work, google "buchberger 12".

That program Buchberger is conservative. If you get it, read it and/or listen carefully to ALL the advice in the book & DVD. Don't just start doing exercises imo.

Maybe a rotator cuff injury. A rotator cuff injury is an injury to one or more of the four muscles in the shoulder. This shoulder injury may come on suddenly and be associated with a specific injury such as a fall (acute), or it may be something that gets progressively worse over time with activity that aggravates the muscle (chronic). Occasionally, even a simple act like rolling over in bed can result in a rotator cuff injury.

I suggest you see a doctor to properly diagnose the problem.

The pain has resurfaced after going away from a long time..came back benching and got worse OHP'ing... Cha59, if you're reading this...I'm considering seeing this guy - http://www.sportsperformancecentres.com/aboutus.html. Dr. Jason A. Pajaczkowski (scroll down for profile). Any thoughts on his certifications? He's the only chiro in Toronto and the surrounding area as per the link you gave me earlier in the thread that is certified in the Bio mechanics level of ART.

fwiw...
i have been suffering with the same type of pain recently. starts in my neck, goes across the shoulder and runs down the back and outside of my left arm. my whole arm falls asleep or gets tingly when i run (run every day). hurts bad enough to wake me up if i sleep the wrong way, and some times just aches as i am sitting or driving. feels like some sort of nerve thing. i am not sure what happened to bring it on, but i was sleeping on a crappy bed at my inlaws when i started having the problem, and got worse when i was moving the next week.

i have had lower back issues for about 20 years, bulging discs, sciatica, back spasms and other issues. the arm problem feels the exact same as when i have had sciatica in my legs. had mri and cat scan and surgery was recommended. declined surgery and deal with the discomfort. the arm actually felt better today on a longer run, and not really noticable right now.

I've had similar problems in my shoulders, arms, neck, etc. with the shooting pains, tingling & numbness, arm falling asleep, etc. A lot of days I used to wake up and both of my arms would be completely numb. It had nothing to do with blood flow - it was the nerves being pinched.

In my case, and in a lot of cases according to my chiro, it is caused by muscle adhesions (aka knots or trigger points) pinching the gaps where the nerves run through various parts of your body. ART has helped me tremendously with that, as well as with low back and knee problems and some other stuff.

This book I've been reading recently has shed a lot of light on my muscle problems: http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point-.../dp/1572243759

It says that most pains are usually due to trigger points. After what I have experienced, I agree. I heartily recommend that book.
