I actually thought exactly the same thing before I tried it, but I think it worked (?) for me because not extending my hips explosively was a bigger issue than letting the bar drift out in front of me.
I get that you could take that cue too far and hit the bar "too" hard with your hips and push it out in front, but I guess it's a bit like squatting "too" deep for noobies. Yeah, I'm sure it's possible to squat too deep, but it's pretty unlikely anyone is doing that.
