Difficult question! With certainty money, richness, life style or an expensive car is not everything or important to be happy in your life. For my parents this land was their homeland (or their "Heimat") and it had a very high value and meaning in their life.
Today I understand this. They did'nt need big supermarkets or a big company for a job. They had their own land, were able to produce everything they required in order to lead a worriless and decent life and they didn't know pollution of the environment, tainted water, a highway traffic jam and didn't need a globalized industry or a hazardous atomic plant in order to produce electric power.

Nicht sehr weit entfernt liegt die Ruine der Burg Werdenfels, die dem Bischof von Freising erhörte.

Your picture comparision is very perverse.
My picture shows lost German homeland looked from the German / Czech border after the 2nd world war. All this land was always settled (for more then 2000 years!) by Germans and belonged:
1st Germanic tribes like Marcomannic people.
2nd to the Franconian Empire, then
3rd to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and then
4rd starting with 1867 to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (under German Emperors).
After World War I this area belonged suddenly to the Czech republic, but the red marked land was still owned by Germans. After World War II this area was cleaned from ethnic Germans and the whole land of the Germans in this area was stolen by the Czech republic.
Since 2004 the Czech republic belongs to the EU. Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder lead us into hot water! Now the labor market is open and the Czechs will still rob us even further.
In the Czech republic live approx. 123 inhabitants per square kilometer. In Germany we have almost twice as much. Today 4-times more Vietnamese people (61,102) live within the Czech Republic than German people (14,156)!
