Re: Whisky
Went to Reserve 101 in Houston last week. What a great whisky bar. If you are ever near downtown Houston definitely check it out. Here is their partial list:

I got to try so many new ones. Too bad I only remember half of them.

Re: Whisky
Nice thread. I've decided to start buying and drinking Whisky after reading. Bought my first bottle today "Jura, scotch 10 years", "light and delicate with a warming honey finish" - sounded like a good place to start. It tasted pretty good, although I have nothing to compare it to

Re: Whisky
Isle of Jura is a very respectable whisky. Good choice!
This evening, I'm enjoying a wonderful birthday gift from a friend:
Citrus and sweetness on the nose. Light wood at the front mellowing into warm smooth buttery notes. Mild spice and fruit underneath throughout. Absolutely delightful.
From what I've read, many can distinguish cinnamon, lemon and currant flavors. I don't, personally, at least not very distinctly. The aftertaste definitely has a cinnamon note, though; so it's certainly in there.

Re: Whisky
I've picked up a few bottles recently and felt I could contribute a bit. Not a very serious whisky drinker but have had a taste for the stuff for a few years.
Balvenie Doublewood:
Amazingly smooth and sweet, vanilla, while not having a gross syrup quality that you find in cheap bourbons. Seems like a really good value to me also.
Laphroaig Quarter Cask:
Also surprisingly smooth and the flavor blew me away, having never had an Islay before. Took a few refills to really synthesize all the flavor, really nice smooth and long finish.
Redbreast 12:
Not bad but nothing unique, nice flavor, little bit sweet but is definitely lacking something... Would not buy again probably.

Re: Whisky
Brought a bottle of Bowmore Cask Strength to a get together the other night. It was the hit of the party, even the non whiskey drinkers liked it. Picked it up in the dutyfree at the London airport and someone mentioned to me that it isnt available in the U.S.

Sounds great. I think one of my favorites was also a sherry cask. Balvenie 18 yr sherry I believe but I haven't seen it in years now.

Last night I tried Bunnahabain 12 Bruichladdich 12 and Ardbeg Uigedal (sp?) at a local Scottish Pub. Ardbeg was fantastic as usual and despite what I expected I liked Bunnahabhain better than Bruichladdich.

Re: Whisky
Whisky drinkers,
http://www.drinkhacker.com/2012/02/0...t-code-within/
I've been to the SF one the last couple of years and it has been a really good time. $135 w/ the $15 coupon code at that link. So definitely quite expensive, but you can taste a LOT of whisky in two hours, and it does include a dinner buffet which has been pretty good.

Re: Whisky
Picked up a bottle of this:
Very good. I'm not nearly as schooled in the finer points, but I can say this: It has that same bite that some of the harsher ones have, but with a smoothness that those lack. Quite tasty.
Also got one of these in case the above wasn't good:

Just had some parker's heritage, which is aged in cognac barrel(s. I quite liked it. Makers like, but less sweet. Very nice neat. Don't think it is available elsewhere Idk. O liked it

Two of my all time favorites. Very nice choices.
If you like the Ardbeg, but want one with a touch less peat flavour, try their Blasta. Very nice, and still very definitely Ardbeg, but it lets some of the other flavours shine through a bit more.

This is pretty damn good. Nice, smoky flavor and smooth finish. The bottle top sucks though. The cork broke off from the cap easily.
