Looks like a great price, would love to get my hands on a bottle.

Some guy locally is trying to sell a bottle of Glenfiddich 40yr, which here retails for about $9500CAD. Looks like worldwide price is about $3500-4000CAD (3kUSD). Says he will take the best offer, so I offered 1k even though I don't really want it. Would probably go 1500 if he countered. No idea what I would do with it though, probably let it sit and collect dust.

i had a sample of a cs 38y old Glenfiddich last year.it was nice but nearly 1k nice.

That's a solid deal! I've been partial to Bourbon cask balvenies, but that sherry cask is pretty good too.

But for me, Glendronach has the best sherried whiskys at the under $100 price point. The 18yo is excellent, and I still have a stash of the 15yo which is amazing.

I'm staying true to my previous post by nursing a handle of regular Four Roses like a calf at a teat. Catch you bitches at post time on Saturday.

Spare me the silver cup, muddled mint leaves, ice, and fancy bourbon. As long as you do not spare me the Oxford comma, you're okay with me.

I'm pretty new to really getting into bourbon but have made up for lost time and have gotten really immersed into it. Have tried and have over 50 bottles already.

My opinion is to avoid most of the list you provided when staring off as those are primarily craft bottles and most craft have a ways to go.

I'd consider something from the list below to get started.

Buffalo Trace
Eagle Rare

Russel Reserve 10 yr

Evan Williams Single Barrel
Henry McKenna Single Barrel 10yr
Elijah Craig

Knob Creek Small Batch

Four Roses small batch or single barrel

All are somewhat available under $40 and in the 86 to 100 proof range. All are good representations of the bourbon profile.

My preference would be McKenna, Elijah Craig if it's the old bottle with 12yr age statement on front or back, Russel Reserve 10yr, Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace if you can find a barrel select. A lot of people like four roses but I didn't care much for it, it seems like there having supply issues and quality has dropped in the past year or so.

I'm with Nit - if you haven't explored bourbon a lot yet, try a bunch of those and some of the more common ryes first before venturing out. Most of the new craft whiskies are IMO not as good as the more traditional stuff.

However, I have tried a few of the whiskies on the list, mainly at whiskey festivals. Some thoughts:

Westland - OK, but didn't wow me or anything (I'm yet to be impressed with any "American single malt")

Charbay - it's.... interesting. Like it says, it's a super hoppy whiskey. Good to try if you get a chance, but I don't think it's worth the hype - more of a novelty thing to me.

Dad's Hat - very solid whiskey.

Balcones - another hyped one I don't get, way overrated imo

High West - they put out a bunch of very good whiskies

Leopold Bros - not a fan, everything I've tried from them has had a weird overly malty kinda sickly sweet finish to it

Smooth Ambler - everything I've tried from them has been great

WhistlePig - good stuff, but waaaaay overpriced in general imo

Cut Spike - another single malt I'm not into

Strangely at odds with devil here.

I was pleasantly surprised that this list understood how much American whiskey is sourced and disclosed as much. I've had most of the whiskey on the list and much of it is meh, but I give thumbs up to the following:

-smooth ambler
-high west
-leopold brothers (but only their American whiskey. It's obv young but i quiet like the grassy/yeasty taste)
-charbay - not for everybody I guess but pretty different/interesting

Big thumbs down to:
-dads hat. Blech.
-whistlepig...just by Jefferson's and save your $$$

Haha I don't think we're that much at odds. Only differences were:

Leopold - here we disagree, I really dislike that yeasty taste

Charbay - I came off too negative, I agree with what you wrote and their product in general is good

Dad's hat - I remember that being good but can't say for sure, just tasted at an event

I haven't had Dad's Hat but heard good things. Also heard good things about Balcones but less likely to try it now.

Have had some Smooth Ambler Old Scout Cask Strength it's in my top 5 whiskey list.

High West is solid Rye those guys know what they're doing.

Refuse to drink Whistle Pig. I'll wait until Alberta Distillers comes out with there own aged barrel proof of the rye used in Canadian Club blend.

High West Double Rye is great value

Big shakeup in the secondary bourbon market. Some long time trusted seller was busted selling refilled bottles to the tune of over $100k worth of damages.

Lol, just saw somebody posted here and came to post same. Will be interesting to see if this is the beginning of the American whiskey bubble burst. At a minimum, I think it's likely to slow down the gray secondary market for a bit.

So I was driving through SC and seeing the billboard reminded me that someone had told me to check this place out - Sugar Tit Distillery. So i did the 10 minute drive off 85 and stopped in. I bought a tank top and a bottle just because why not, let's support the locals trying to make a living and it is hilarious anyway. Well, she gave me a taste of her Sugar Tit and it was so damn good, I can't wait to crack open my bottle ("Simply Naked") this weekend.

Lol pricing at my local liquor store. I snatched the discontinued 15yo to add to my stash. Now I have two closed bottles and one open to enjoy until they start producing the 15yo again.

Even so i still have 2 closed bottles i couldn´t resist €61 (i`m such a scrooge )

Nice! I love the 18yo too, but the 15 is my favorite and the latest batches were way older anyway.

I just got back from my trip to Venice and Trieste where
i found those in a small enoteca(wine shop)
Seems that the Springbank whiskies are not very popular in Italy since these bottles where bottled some years back(Longrow was bottled 2001)

Came across Rhetoric 23 at my local liquor store the other day and bought a couple of bottles. Anyone tried it and have any opinions?

I picked up a bottle the other day also. Haven't tried it yet though. Let us know how it is if you try it. I imagine it will be over oaked.

I don't remember which year I had, but I tried one of the rhetorics and had the same reaction as I've had to all the orphan barrels I've tried. Pretty good, but imo also quite overpriced.

@devil @mano - this is the conventional on orphan barrels...decent/good booze. Over-priced/over-hyped

Had a couple of scotches at the office a month or so ago that I hadn't tasted before.

Enjoyed the Aultmore Foggie Moss 12 y.o. 46% ; fruity, warm citrus.



The Inchmurrin 15 y.o. 46%; also fruity, bourbon; the non-chill filtered light colouring created an interesting visual contrast to the spicy, vanilla flavours and finish. Preferred the Aultmore tho.

Kavalan fans,

A friend grabbed a bottle of cask strength Kavalan Sherry Cask http://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1165833 for $200.

In general, I've thought Kavalan is a little overpriced/overrated, but wow was this good. VERY hot, though, can definitely taste the proof. The flavor is so intense - huge sherry flavor, edging towards a sort of plummy/pruny taste. I loved it.
