Sure, would be fun. And don't be surprised if you get the picks wrong

I've never had any of them other than Maker's Mark, so I'm sure I would. Free old fashioned if arrive before 8. Bonus!

This an awesome deal and sounds like a lot of fun. For comparison a local steakhouse has Van Winkle Lot B 12 yr for $83 for a 2oz pour.

I think anyone who drinks whiskey neat semi regularly should be able to pick up the Van Winkle and probably MM vs Larceny/Rebel Yell.

That won't be me, as I've never had any of them other than MM. We're going, though. I'm expecting the Van Winkle pour will be very small, surely less than an ounce. I guess the others will have to match in size if they don't want to give it away that way.

Nailed it! Girlfriend and I figured we should vary our answers for better odds. We eliminated two on first taste and then one. She went with three and me four, and four was right. They ended up being 1. Maker's, 2. Rebel Yell, 3. Larceny, 4. Van Winkle. Pour was predictably small. Less than a pinkie. Took three tiny sips of each.

Nice!

I'm a member of a club and could go to tastings on a weekly basis. So far it's been "windows shopping", all offers are in the e-mail, but guess it's the way to go for coming to the next level.

Can't remember if I mentioned this or not in this thread but putting about half a teaspoon of scotch onto a raw oyster is pretty amazing.

Heard it from a bartender in January. Confirmed multiple times now.

I find the salt/smoke flavor really comes out in both the whisky and the oyster. Just a perfect combination.

Talisker and Lagavulin have been great for this. Laphroig was ok but not as good.

Still trying to find an oyster bar that has some old pulteney to try to pull out the sea flavors more.

They had oysters at the Lagavulin 200th year celebrations on Islay as well.A match made in heaven for me.
Had oysters with some different whiskies and Clynelish and Laga were the best for me so far,but i haven´t tried it with O.P. yet

Oyster/scotch does sound like a great combo. Seems like HP12 might be another good / available one to try this with, although maybe not smoky enough?

Coincidentally had some Highland Park 12 today. Unfortunately without oysters.

Good household whisky

Please excuse me if the following information has already been mentioned earlier in a thread too long to parse efficiently.

FOR BARGAIN HUNTERS:

Four Roses is the bomb. Buy a handle.

Remember in economics 101 when your professor explained it is possible to derive more utility than you paid for the cost of the product? Four Roses is the case study on that.

If you are in Florida, you can sometimes get Four Roses Single barrel for less than $40. That is ridiculous. I got mine in Fort Lauderdale for $37, and I was quite delighted. Up here it is north of $50.

Old Overholt Rye is $13/fifth where I live. It is packaged as rotgut, but it is awesome rotgut. If you order a rye Manhattan at Keens Steak House in NYC without specifying the rye, you are getting Old Overholt. And you are probably going to think your $15 cocktail is goddamn delicious.

However, you just paid more for your drink than a judicious shopper would have paid for an entire bottle. If you buy a bottle of Old Overholt for your bar at home, you are, um, not mentally defective or something.

FOR EVERYDAY LUSHES WITH A LITTLE MONEY:

Buffalo Trace is the finest everyday bourbon I know of. It is ultra-smooth with layers of delicious flavors too numerous to list here. It works perfectly with just one or two ice cubes.

When I was reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, I rushed home from work every day to pour a stiff drink, crack the pages, and endure the disappointed look of the broad on the other couch. She got over it after a while. Lonesome Dove combined with Buffalo Trace was such a great combination, it was worth jerking off for the better part of a week.

Maker's Mark is bland and overpriced. That crap is for amateurs with a weird wax fetish. Take it to 4chan, boys.

George Dickel Rye is not only spicy and complex, it also has some of the finest packaging design I have ever seen. There is a weird conglomeration of fonts, combined with the green, gold, and white, and the logo on the glass. Somehow it all matches the oddity of the flavors. 10/10 on the rocks. 7/10 neat. I have a hard time walking past it in the booze store without roping a fifth, because I am a raging alcoholic with good taste.

ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE

If you ever spend more than $25 on a whiskey in a bar, for the most part, you might be a tool. Your taste buds probably can't discern the difference between Pappy Van Winkle and Whistle Pig. But your friends/business associates/significant other sure will be impressed with you. Won't they? At least you'll impress yourself, and when you really get down to it, that's all that matters. Isn't it? To convince yourself you can taste the difference?

Ardbeg is the greatest of Islay malts. I will crawl through my computer screen and fight you if you so much as raise an eyebrow toward my claim.

Ardbeg Uigeadail (I had to look up how to spell that, and probably still got it wrong) is the greatest bang for the buck in the history of whisky. Price varies greatly by region.

Laphroiag 10 is another fine Islay Malt. It was legal in the USA during prohibition because the importer bribed the crap out of a corruptible government official (and which of them aren't?), and then floated the story that the iodine taste a) had medicinal properties and b) deterred recreational drinkers.

That is the extent of my limited wisdom. I look forward to learning from you.

Shhh if you and DOS above keep spreading the word people are going to start buying up rye like George Dickel that goes for $20 a bottle and it won't be on the shelf anymore and we'll be stuck having to buy $50 bottles of Redemption which is essentially the same thing.

Nit,

You're really overpaying for Redemption rye!

Ha actually not buying any of these and was actually confusing with Templeton rye which still doesn't go for $50. I need to try some nicer rye out only keep it around for manhattans and other cocktails and stuff like baby Sazerac and Dickel.

Thinking of online K&L, do you have any experience with putting items on there waiting lists? Would love to try some of there exclusive barrels.

Nit,

What are you thinking about?

I've done the waiting list and gotten notified as promised for out of stock stuff. I'm not sure it would work for private barrel stuff because each one is a different/unique listing.

The four roses private barrels they have are great. I've had four of five of those over the past few years and they've all been excellent, some of my favorite bourbon.

Diablo saw in the past they did exclusive barrels of Weller Antique, Elijah Craig, Eagle Rare etc. Was hoping if you put yourself on the waitlist for a previous barrel they'd notify you if they get a new one.

That's not good I do know of people in other areas of the country getting select barrels of those products but maybe K&L doesn't do those brands anymore.

I might just shoot them an email.
