Work sucked came home made a great cocktail. 2oz angels envy rye 1oz martini Rossi sweet 2 dashes peychaud's bitters 2 dashes angostura bitter small squirt of lemon juice shaken with ice into a glass with one cube of ice. It's so good, I had bought some bullet rye but had to try the angels and it's so much better.

Pete,

I laughed at all the bolded. They have some creative writers among their tasting notes people.

Stumbled on a bottle of the new willett 2 yr rye today. Nothing exciting and I'm naturally suspicious of such young whiskey, but this is the first willett distillate, so thought I'd give it a try for $35.

Have heard good things but hard to tell if that's just the hype machine or not - will crack it open soon and decide for myself

And thanks for the tips on the Freya all. I tracked down an empty, which will do just fine for my purposes

What excitement! A care package from manndl arrived yesterday. Never have I seen eye-dropper bottles put to such good use, I have 7 lots of samples from these very bottles, which I'll find a friend to split with me so we can report back!

Thanks, manndl!!

Best,
Pete

A couple of interesting articles...

Which also made NPR:

And while about vodka and tequila, so not directly related to this group, but still a great read: http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/bizfin...eatures/10816/

Foo,

I see the barrelled year but when was it dumped? Looks interesting, let us know how it tastes...

Best,
Pete

Guys,

Correct - barreled 57, bottled 67.

More importantly though, Stitzel Weller distillate from when van winkle was running the show. The original pappy van winkle, as it were. Widely gets ranked up there as one of the GOAT bourbons.

Will share notes when I pop it open, but will prolly be a while - plan on waiting for a special occasion.

While shopping for metaxa and ouzo in Greece I happened to run into a bottle of talisker 25 for 125 euros. I could not resist getting it at that price. The only problem is that I can't open it until I get home next week. First world problem, obviously. Review to come then.

I bought the grand reserve, aged up to 30 years. Tried it a couple of nights ago and it was great.

So, I cracked (and subsequently emptied) one of my Jefferson Presidential Select 18yr bottles this weekend for my birthday. Gave out a lot of tastes neat to non-whisky drinking friends. Everyone loved it and tried to come back for more.

So easily the best bourbon I have had yet to date. Just a great finish on this one. If you can find it anymore I would highly recommend it.

Mann, I forgot to mention that they also had the talisker 30 for 185 euros, which comes out to about $250. That seems like a killer deal, considering that the price at klwines for that bottle is $430. Have you tried the 30yo? If you had, what's your opinion of it?

I have one more day in Athens to decide, but if I get it I will probably have to get an extra suitcase because the one I have is full of booze already!

Guller:

Great booze indeed! Sadly, like many old favorites, you have to be stupid lucky to find a bottle at retail these days.

Happy drinking!

i tried both and they are both outstanding!

Thanks Mann. There's a bit of a novelty factor on having all the official releases (I have the 18, 25, and DE and it would be easy to get the 10), but it's probably not worth the money and hassle of getting an extra suitcase.

sipping on a 7 star at the moment, great stuff! Didn't try the 5 star, but why do you think it's better than the 7

Starting using this a couple days ago:

When you want whisky and want to be refreshed at the same time. It's not something I would use with my better whisky like Ardbog of course. I used it with my Willett rye and WP. In case it isn't obvious, the point of the sphere ice is that it dilutes at a slower pace, allowing for cooling with a smaller watering effect
