Hi,

this should be the topic for us shades lovers. Post the ones you have and had, which you are looking to buy, where do you buy them, why do you buy them etc.

I'll start with my favorites that I've bought ~18 months ago and got them for a really sweet price. They used to be 200$ retail, and got them for 60$.



They are Black Fly's former top model, Fly Bolt with gunmetal frames. Made entirely from nickel silver, kinda Yakuza mobster looks and are one of the lightest sunglasses I've ever worn. As you can see, the glass is a bit separated from the frames which I haven't seen in many models and looks neat as you don't really notice the separation when you wear them.

There's also a version with silver frames, but as the model is EOL, I can't get them anywhere.

Any recommendations for a decent pair of lightweight sunglasses? I guess somewhere in the 50-250 range is great.

I went in to a local sunglasses shop the other day and they didn't sell a single pair below $500(!!) so I just left. I prefer black, thin frames(no big Gucci sunglasses for me thank you) and black, non-gradient lenses.

I guess the biggest issue is the weight and price for me.

So glad this thread was made.

I guess you could take a look at some new Sting or Police models or even Ray Ban. And all of these are well within the 200$ range.

Went down and grabbed a pair of these




Paid $310 for them, apparently with MJ you can't negotiate prices(one ride on the ferris wheel costs one nap in the same bed) so I just ate the price.

They fall under the ultra-thin line and are very lightweight, extremely comfortable.

It was funny, the guy said "Maui Jim's are great because you get a lot of great features at a pretty reasonable price."

I guess $310 is the new $15.


About polarization, here's a good way to tell if those sunglasses you're about to get are really polarized. I can't(or don't know how) to embed a video in to the forum so just click here and watch the video. link

I tried it at home and yeah, looking at the computer with them on I can hardly see anything at all, almost total black, when I turn the lenses 90 degrees I can see everything. Cool!


The only thing I didn't like was they didn't come with a cleaning cloth. Just a hard case and a little pamphlet about the features.

they definitely should have given you a cloth, go back and get one. Its the only thing you should be cleaning them with so you don't scratch the lenses.

I bought some silly expensive D&G sunglasses last year but I don't wear them that often because I don't want to break them/leave them somewhere.

I want to get $15-30 aviators that I don't need to worry about breaking/losing. Any suggestions?

just go to a truck stop anywhere in the south / midwest and you should stumble on a pair eventually. there are lots of cheapo sunglasses companies online too if you check amazon or something like that.

i have had zillions of different pairs of sunglasses, they always break or get deformed, but a few weeks back i got a pair of black-framed wayfarer knockoffs while on tour at a mall in altoona PA for like 6 bucks. love em. most of the ones you see in stores here in NY are for skinny hipsters with tiny heads, had to go to the sticks where people like to eat food to find some that fit over my gigantic mellon.

Make sure your sunglasses have UV protection or you will damage your eyes.

Dark lenses allow your eye to open up wider but without UV protection you're still letting the harmful rays in.

I'd be especially weary with knockoff sunglasses.

You can also get them through Amazon, from the same company.

Someone mentioned 15$ sunglasses... whatever you do, never ever wear these kind of shades, ESPECIALLY outside. Quality sunglasses are pricey not only because of their name or design, but because they have great protection and do not damage your eyes in the long term. Bad lens = bad eyes, no discussion about it.

If you want cool and quality things, then you have to invest money in them. I'd rather pay 100$+ and have my eyes intact then spend 1k+ on some silly suit.

Ya but I don't want to lose/break my sunglasses and feel stupid.

I broke like 4 pairs of Oakleys in the last few years doing stupid **** (have them on my head hit head on car door, leave them on roof of car as I drive away, but them in pocket and sit on them, etc)

I'm on like my 3rd pair of Maui Jim's in a row--they are really hard to beat for me and, important if you spend much time on the water, have the best polarized lenses of any manufacturer. I like Ray-Ban's alright too as far as decent, non ridiculous looking sunglasses go.
