Surefires are really nice, but they're expensive. There are a lot of things out there that will be significantly better than Mag's LED offerings but cheaper than surefires.

If you do want a surefire, look at the E2L and E1L as well. The L4 is brighter, but the batteries will (obviously) not last as long. The E2L and E1L also have two-stage switches, which means they have a low-power mode if you just need a little bit of light.

I carry the L4 (and have carried it for many years now). I tried a couple of two-stage lights and didn't find the feature that useful, though many people do.

The best endorsement I can give to the L4 is that I have been doing homebrew LED flashlight modifications for almost 10 years and the L4 is the only light I have carried totally unmodified. It's a bit dated, but the design is so solid that it's still a first-class light.

Some other things you might want to look at:

Fenix LD20

The LD20 uses AA batteries instead of the CR123s that surefires use, which is a big plus for many people.

Re: Stuff to buy, just because you can.

pvn's list is pretty awesome. Everyone should have a Dremel, those things are the lathe of the new century.

For lighting, IMO the way to go is Princeton Tec :

they have best circuitry in the business, they produce more light and use less power. The head lamps are awesome for backpacking. They also make the best bicycle lights in the biz :

Is a dremel just for sharpening things?

Polishing, grinding, cutting, sanding, sharpening, anything but hammering.

That's a necessity purchase, not a luxury purchase.
