Surefires are really nice, but they're expensive. There are a lot of things out there that will be significantly better than Mag's LED offerings but cheaper than surefires.
If you do want a surefire, look at the E2L and E1L as well. The L4 is brighter, but the batteries will (obviously) not last as long. The E2L and E1L also have two-stage switches, which means they have a low-power mode if you just need a little bit of light.
I carry the L4 (and have carried it for many years now). I tried a couple of two-stage lights and didn't find the feature that useful, though many people do.
The best endorsement I can give to the L4 is that I have been doing homebrew LED flashlight modifications for almost 10 years and the L4 is the only light I have carried totally unmodified. It's a bit dated, but the design is so solid that it's still a first-class light.
Some other things you might want to look at:
Fenix LD20
The LD20 uses AA batteries instead of the CR123s that surefires use, which is a big plus for many people.
