Dude go eat a damn sammich before you get blown away by a stiff breeze. It's gonna be tough for your to find a board that rides right because if you get one big/long enough for your feet and height you aren't going to really be able to load it up in turns/jumps since you weigh so little.

good point, not many people understand the boards size depends on your weight, not your height. so when you go into sports authority or whatever they will be judging it to your chin, tell em' gfyo. and find someone who knows what the hell they are selling.

I don't know if you will find a wide enough board for your size, I think around 158-160 would be your range. look into lib tech, or gnu. get a board with magnatraction and thank me later

Does it really make that much of a difference? I've never ridden any boards that have it.

it's the nutz on ice. doesn't affect jibbing/rails or anything. But saving those times you get owned by a random ice patch is great. I have yet to sharpen my edges since I bought it early last year, and even though they are pretty dull now they still grab great.

For those who don't know what magna traction is. The sides of the board instead of being your std. concave shape. it's kind of a jagged, serrated edge.

on your std. snowboard when you carve you have like two points of contact the front and the back, on magna traction you get like 7 points of contact. at the ends and 5 in between. so when you do hit ice you actually grab. crazy idea huh?

I bought a lib tech trs 154 last year, and absolutely love it. I have some friends who ride the same size decks and I've switched boards with them all because they wanted to try it. they all want one now. my other riding buddy just bought a GNU with magna traction this season and loves it too.

I don't understand why more companies are not using this.


One other thing,

When I bought my last snowboard I didn't know what size I needed, I asked the salesman and he told me you should stand the board up next to you and it should be just under your nose or so. he lined me out with an expensive solomon 160. BTW I'm 5'10", about 150#'s.

Well, he was an Idiot with a capital f*ck'n I. your snowboard size is based on your weight, in my case a 154/155 is about my range. 160 is too damn stiff, and long. I didn't know any better and rocked the hell out of that thing for about 5 1/2 years. Once I got on the correct size, snowboarding became even more fun.

i used to ride a lot of park and have been using an older forum 155. nowadays i'm doing a lot more free riding, and prob some really deep powder stuff/heliskiing. i'd like to hit the park occasionally still. any good suggestions for a more versatile board? im 5'11 155.

also prob gonna get boots, bindings and pants. anyone want to post their dream setups?

Best winter in over 20 years in the Italian Alps. Dropped almost 2 meters of snow at my house last week, and has been snowing again for the past two days leaving another 70cm and the promise of another 2 days of snow to come. Up on the glacier they have already over 5 meters of the pure white stuff. A good mate of mine who is a ski instructor here went to Whistler to do the season there this year. He came back on Saturday after seeing the mess at Whistler this year. Here's a photo of my house which sits at 800 meters.

i went to revelstoke this past week and it was awesome

I'm a 10.5 too, but wound up getting 10's that were a bit snug since the liners compress as they mold to your feet so after 3 or 4 days of riding they fit perfectly. Plus, if you get a size 10 boot you can get into medium bindings, which lets you ride way more boards than if you have larges mounted.

The Burton C60's are teh hotness, imo. Nylon/carbon fiber blend with nice gel padding for your footbed, and cushy air straps(these things are the nuts, for serious). Make sure you match boot and binding brands, since they're designed around each other and will interface more closely with each other than with other brands.

Honestly, any of the Burton boots from the Hail on up are going to be fine. It really comes down to whether you like stiff boots or flexible boots; they're all light and comfy.

Boards like the Burton Vapor and T6 are super SUPER light. With that comes a lot of chatter on ice, so you'll sacrifice some level of smoothness. Probably some of the most expensive sticks on the market, but hard to say if they're worth the price tag.

Check out the Gnu Danny Kass signature, Rome Design, and Forum Seeker to start. Up to you whether you want a twin or directional twin; the directional will do better in pow. Although, if you are doing any serious powder riding you may as well just get a big powder stick to have for those trips.

Helmets and deep snow FTW.

Any good recs on helmets? I keep telling myself I'll start riding with one but haven't found one I like yet.

Whatever fits your noodle best. There's some sick bluetooth/speaker tech out there if you want to drop ~ $100 or more.

I haven't ever noticed too big of a difference between vented/non-vented helmets.

But I would highly rec getting one. Even today falling in soft snow I can guarantee the helmet made a huge difference in the severity of my bell-ringing. Nevermind hitting a tree or another skiier.

i have a gyro helmet with built in headphones and i really like it. whatever you go with, i'd highly recommend getting something with headphones.

Wow...I am 6'1" and about 180 pounds and I ride a 151. I mostly just ride the park and mainly rails but yea, I would be pissed too if someone set me up with that size board. Obv that guy shouldn't be selling snowboards.

That would certainly save me the hassle of dealing with my stupid earbuds falling out. That, more than anything, drives me nuts when i'm riding.

Heading to Breckenridge on the 27th with my brother and two friends. Going to be quite the road trip from NC out there. Would rather fly but all of us being 20 makes renting a car a hassle. We will be hitting up Breckenridge and Vail until January 4th so if anyone's going to be out there let me know. Definitely going to be boarding during the day and drinking/partying at night (esp New Years ldo).....

I've always wondered about this. How many of you listen to an iPod while skiing? I've considered doing this before, but it always just seemed pretty ******ed and dangerous. I listen to the noise of the ski slope quite a bit and this always seemed safer to me.

My new helmet has a headphones built in, so I might give it a try.

I've taken my ipod for days Im alone. when skiing I might have it on at very low volume, certainly quiet enough to hear other people. on the lift/in line i'll turn it up

I did this too. I have only worn them once but my feet were killing me.

Its snowing in mammoth! wooo just in time for my trip up there on saturday - wednesday.

Yeah I like to board with my ipod as well. Not to loud when you are actually running. But when its really cold and I have my full mask on I cant wear the ear buds so this year im going to take my over ear headphones so i can wear them if it is freezing cold and windy.

It kinda sucks the first day or two but after that your boots fit perfectly and it's awesome. The best way to handle it is to lace the bottom loose and then make the top tight, so you have as much wiggle room as possible while you're breaking them in.
