splitboard tech has come a long way in 10 years. they used to be sloppy as hell but have progressed to the point now where they are very rideable hence why they are so popular now.. stuck together with clips and through the bindings.

a good warmup for NZ at the end of the month.

Just went to Splitfest NSW 2013 this past weekend.
Was unreal, the best weekend Ive ever had riding in Australia. The snow was pretty average but the whole weekend was amazing. Met some incredible people and the highlight was getting to met and ride with pro splitboarder Kyle Miller. Awesome dude.

my first 4 days in new zealand i spent on black peak near wanaka.
we got heli'd in and then spent the next 4 days touring around the surrounding area whilst living in a hut.
this was a backcountry based tour focusing on improving backcountry touring skills.
on our last day we skinned out to treble cone which took about 7 hours.

the best powder turns ive had in NZ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YspLa...mtndL3C_k_KJrQ

easily the best turns on the mountain and it was free. splitboarding is the answer.

had another good day at cardrona and then today was at remarkable which was a horrible day.
super windy, bad light, did 1 mellow run off the back and then skinned back and rode home. would suck to pay $90 to ride that ****.
im really enjoying splitboarding and im starting to realise why these backcountry guys never ride resort, theres really no comparison.

Just to let you know, ive started having boarding lessons since reading this thread, ive skiied for a while, but thought id step over to the dark side.

Still cant turn on heel edge, keep standing up and board comes away from me and i land on my butt, kills

mouthtoilet - any good resorts near Hammamatsu in Japan you know of?

im not super familiar with that area but from the looks of it your nearest ski areas are in gifu.
http://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-r...refecture/gifu

i wouldnt worry about 'good' resorts, id just find a close cheap one and go as much as possible to learn to link turns and then you should go to hakuba.

off to temple basin tomorrow for splitfest NZ weekend.
should be epic, snow forecast tonight.

so temple basin is fricken gnarly as hell.
its a club field in arthurs pass and world renowned for its epic freeriding (they just had a freeride world tour stop here a few weeks ago)
anyway, to simply get to it, you have to hike an hour up to the ski field.
today i rode with kyle miller. we skinned from the bottom until we hit sheet ice. time to put on boot crampons and get the ice axe out. this was the first time ive ever used crampsons and an axe and it was a scary and challenging experience for me especially since kyle is a pro and just blasts off leaving me all alone to deal with a steep face of ice where one misstep and im falling 100 metres.
got to the top and got some decent turns off the back, there was a wet slide from probably yesterday so we picked some mellower terrain.
we skinned back up to the top and kyle decided to do another lap, but i had enough and called it.
i feel like im a bit in over my head here, i had no idea what to expect coming here but its really pushing my riding.

epic.

just started boarding, in part to some of the things in this thread, im an ok skier, so its gonna take a bit to get to that level, boarding it seems you have to put a lot more in earlier on `just to get down`. just about linking turns now after 6hrs.

so my new zealand adventure has come to an end.
spent my last day with kyle again and a few other insane locals.
we crampon-ed from the base to the top and rode some really tight chutes in an area called upper bills.
my impressions of NZ have drastically changed after this trip. The level of riding here is world class as well as the terrain. Sure they may not get much powder but the technicality and variability of terrain matches anywhere ive ridden.
the resorts are pretty meh, but if you're a beginner/intermediate then they will do the job and in terms of alternatives to riding at this time (argentina/chile) NZ is better i think.
will post some pics and vids when i get home.
