Interesting idea with the car. Just two follow up questions.

Do you expect all 35 places you go to have at least decent skiing or are you going to be aiming for some places that are basically small and flat but just tick the box toward the 35? I have no idea what kind quality exists at those places so I'm just curious.

My other question is whether you have any worries about getting lonely. I know you were cruising around alone last year but since you were staying in hostiles I assume you were hanging out with people quite a bit? I'm guessing the van idea will be a lot of straight up alone time in a different way and I think that is actually pretty cool but just a more lonely path. Is that ever an issue or a worry of yours? Were you meeting any cool people along the way last year that you got to know and really like or mostly just people in passing?

i expect 90% of the places i go to will have decent snow/terrain as i am researching resorts, reading reviews, trip reports etc and have narrowed it down to the ones ive listed so far. remember japan has over 500 resorts and id estimate 200 of them are worth checking out, its just a matter of finding them. theres tons more i have written down but none of them have reviews or trip reports as no foreigners have visited them.

no issues with getting lonely, though i have been travelling alone on and off for the past 5 years so maybe i am just used to it.
i rarely bother to get to know people as i find most people boring and most conversations usually are about what you do for a living and everyone here knows how tilting it can be to explain the poker lifestyle to regular people.
having said that, there are a bunch of people ive met and kept in touch with so i guess its just like real life, tons of crap people, a few good people.

basically only two options. craigslist and the pique (local newspaper classifieds)
find ads, ring up, check out place. pretty easy, have fun.

Pique is less risky. Finding a place for a few months tho during that time is going to be a serious challenge.

i had no issues finding places both winters for short term accomodation, unless you're a busto with a limited budget, you will be fine.

it's easy to find a crack shack but you wont find any place I consider nice for a reasonable price (2k month)

i disagree completely. 2k is a huge budget and will give you tons of options.
ive stayed in the village, cay heights, brio and white gold for never more than 1400.
normal people who have jobs there are usually paying 700-900 a month.
2k a month and you're balling out of control. literally out of the 50 odd people i know who live there are not paying that.

Im also using VRBO, Allura and owners direct, pickin a bunch of places that look ok and emailing the owners. It does look like i can get something around the 1500/month mark in Creekside. Finding it hard to use craigslist and pique atm because its still so far off and they all want summer tenants. 700-900/month is def doable from what im looking at but only on 6month+ lease whereas im only looking for alittle over 2 months in the busiest time.

yeh those other websites tend to be more expensive, good to use in summer but not so much for winter.
1500 in creekside will get you plenty. crackside is cheaper and the location is not an issue in winter.
just start looking closer to winter, october is best.

I must have different standards of living then cause we were paying 3.1k month for our 2 bedroom 900 sq foot crap hole during the winter. Coupled with insane food prices (20% more than whole foods for conventional) at nesters, it was extremely expensive. By far the best time to be in whistler is summer. Still deciding if im going to Japan, or another season in whistler this year. GL.

maybe we do but you're paying 1550 per person which is almost standard albeit slightly on the high end.
i actually found whistler to be cheap to live, but im coming from sydney and travel on the AUD. Its literally a lot cheaper to live in whistler vs sydney and one place is awesome and the other is awful.
id say to check out japan. you wont bother with whistler again, unless partying, drugs, hooking up with the occasional ugly chick and waiting in massive lift lines are your thing .
ill never go back to whistler for winter, summer is another story.

for those interested in japan's famed history of long abandoned ski resorts.
http://old-skier.seesaa.net/
this guy visits and blogs about them. I literally spent the the whole day going through reading and researching interesting ones to check out on my upcoming trip.
Its quite sad to see what has come and gone through the years.
The one im definitely going to check out is Arai Mountain which is owned by Sony. It opened 93 and closed in 06. Completely missed the ski boom and went bankrupt with 1.1billion in debt, apparently all the infrastructure is still in pretty good shape.

That is pretty insane. Cool and a bit creepy. Only in Japan could an abandoned ski lodge look like that inside.

a buddy of mine went there last summer and said its still pristine inside, all the skis and gear still neatly displayed.

is it technically illegal the go into those lodges then, I guess someone must own then? It looks like a Chernobyl type thing, without the radiation!

yes of course its illegal. urbex is technically illegal everywhere in the world i imagine.

I have a ghost town fascination and I'll be getting as close to the reactor in fukushima as possible. ive been to Chernobyl and it was sick.

i know season pass differences are a bit steeper for argentina than whistler, but what about overall cost of living? I'd expect inflated rent prices and stuff maybe in barriloche, just not sure how it'd compare overall. kinda leaning towards whistler being a better place to be for next season regardless, but was stoked to find this thread
