im questioning the app myself.
a) my friend who is an "OK" snowboarder sent me a pic of a 48mph max speed day she had. unless she became great, she couldnt keep up w/ me at 2/3 speed.
b) today, i went to windham and it was perfect conditions for speed (though just a bit icy). i started out testing the snow and seeing how comfy i was before going all out. there are 3 runs ("double blacks" on the skiers far left side of the mountain) that were open and PERFECT for speed. they are very steep and were slick today. on one of them, i went at about 80% max speed (defined by how comfy i am before i have to stop) and went like 48mph. then, after a while, i told my friend i'd meet her at the bottom and absolutely unleashed on upper wolverine. this is a trail that had visible patches of ice on it to the point where i basically put my tips down and FLEW faster than i can remember going/feeling in ages. the results were:
last year i dont think i felt the speed as much and hit nearly 60mph. i was expecting this to be near or above that (that said, humans have very poor memories for feelings like that so i may have been way more scared last year and dont remember it well). the trail map is here:
http://www.windhammountain.com/image...Map_11_12S.pdf
that run, i did upper wolverine in, not joking, ~20 seconds from top to bottom (just the double black part). it may have even been under 20 seconds. i did very few wide turns and just flew over the icy patches.
i HIGHLY doubt that my runs on the wall (the very steep but very short run) into the blue where i got 48mph consistently were in the same ballpark as the run i did basically fully all out on upper wolverine (as close as i could reasonably get to just pointing my tips straight down the mountain on a very steep slope).
the level of "woohooo...heart in throat" was probably a 6-7 when i was doing the wall and was easily a 9 when i was doing upper wolvering. i very much doubt a 2-3 point difference on that scale equates to a 2mph difference lol.
so yea...something does seem off here...
and yes, petri, 47mph is very fast. no non-pro skier should be going 47mph and not 'feel' the speed. i always think about it like this: if my friend was driving 45mph and i stuck my head out the window w/ my helmet and goggles on, what would that feel like? similarly, if i was being pulled behind the car, what would that feel like?
so from our (obv super small, but logically consistent) data here, it seems the app just puts up "45-50"mph numbers whether above or below that speed.
IDEA: i should actually time this. if we know now long upper wolverine is, and we know my exact time, then we can calc the avg speed of the run. adjust for peaks/troughs in speed and we'll have a legit logic check on the app.
