True re: buses.

Well I'm not sure re: the non-groomed runs but i definitely went from st.anton to lech on a run that tons of people were using next to the road.

Hey, does anybody know of a good website that gives just a general upcoming snow-forecast for all ski resorts (say in North America)? I'm looking to splurge on the plane ticket and book a trip in March last minute so that I can go where the best snow-most powder is/will be.

Wheres the best place to find the information?

best day of the season by far. sunny, 25degrees. awesome

middle of the run off of empire lift (solstice i think?)

another middle of solstice pic

view from the midpoint of solstice

midpoint of some other mogul run

and i'm going to go ahead and check off "went 60mph this season" from my to do list lol. def the fastest i've gone in my life and 100% thanks to skis i demo'd. it's a way different world with tuned, sharpened, and really tapered skis (i hit 53mph w/ the less tapered skis i demo'd. they have a free demo hut for rossignol on the mountain).

Download ski report. It's an app that has all ski resorts in the US. You can sort by "powder" (which is most new recent snowfall). Currently steamboat springs CO is #1 with 27 new inches on an 82" base.

also the dream of doing a 360, while admirable, is not gunna happen. i have 3hrs of skiing tmrw before having to come back to the house and shower/change to go home. there's no jumps i've seen that i would feel comfy doing it, i'm so out of shape that when skiing the mogul runs above at the 8-10k feet elevation, i have basically no lungs left. i rest until i can breath, then do it again. literally pushing myself til the limit. i officially stop when my leg muscles (not my lungs/lack of ability to get air) are just about to stop responding.

so the combo of lack of energy due to having so much fun skiing the stuff above and not seeing anything resembling a safe/good jump to try it make it impossible to accomplish this goal. i'm prob better of trying it at windham or hunter or whatever anyways.

at least i checked off the 60mph dream. and even on that run, i was still holding back (though verrry slightly. it was close, very close, to all out). so at best i prob only coulda gotten another few mphs.

i don't think i could go much faster w/o a 50 degree pitch+ and a skin tight ski suit. it seems the consensus of people who seem to know what they're talking about around here is that the fastest you can go in normal ski clothes in utah is 65-70 (absolute tops and most said 70 wasn't possible). i don't know enough about this stuff to know for sure but i know i was going the closest i've been to 'all out' on a very steep slope so their opinions qualitatively make sense to me.

i enjoy a solid zipper line every once in awhile but this is how i'd rank my favorite type of runs (some might change from day-to-day depending on my mood, but the top 2 is always the same).

1. bluebird champagne "fackin can't breath from all the faceshots" steep/long powder run
2. any other powder run
3. good treeskiing
4. technical line/chute
5. park
6. bumps
7. groomers

imo

as far as the speed thing, some people like to go fast, so i guess it makes sense they want to know how fast they're going. i never measured how fast i ski. i don't give a ****. that's not why i ski. but like with the bumps, every once in a while i straightline some line or GS turn down a groomer just for the giggles.

my take on it is that regardless whether you're a skier/boarder/sitskier/monoskier, as long as you don't put other people at risk, do whatever you want to out there. one exception is snowblades. i never want to see any of you out there on snowblades. if i do i'll punch you in the throat.

speaking of which, heading up to Utah thur-sun this week. will prob post a short TR when I get back.

yeh agree with you on top 2.
3. for me is park
4. trees
5. chutes
6. groomers
bumps not fun at all.

Mouth: both happened incrementally. The rush from speed can, it turns out, be measured. I like to know how fast I'm going both because it gives me something to shoot for and because I can then link the feeling to a number. After a run, I pretty much "know" how fast I went. The feeling of flying down the mountain at highway speeds is indescribable. It's a test too of how far you can push yourself while still in control. Skirting the line of being in control is a rush as well.

For moguls, you might be a snowboarder. If you're not, then I don't know what to tell you. Its tough to rank my ideal ski conditions bc it depends on my mood. My favorite things to ski (top 2) though are 100% either a) steep powder, or b) fluffy powder moguls.

After that (3 and 4) it would be c) steep groomed, or d) the moguls you see in those pictures.

I'm not a huge tree skiing fan and I'd consider "chutes" in the steep powder category unless you meant something else.

But moguls are massive amounts of fun. The rush of doing a field of moguls like that completely in line is also indescribable. I can't do it of course because I have to stop constantly due to being way out of shape. If I lived here though, I'd make it my goal to do that entire mogul field and the following one top to bottom without stopping. If you can do that you are both a solid skier and in insanely good shape.

I think maybe have an open mind about it? I mean they have an Olympic event for this as one of the longtime core skiing events so clearly lots of people love to do it.

Also, moguls are a test of ability and endurance. If you can ski moguls like that in line, you can pretty much ski anything. And they are just so insanely fun.

I have this app and its pretty good but it doesn't give a good overall general upcoming forecast for where the best place is gonna be for say "the next week"

anybody know of a good place that predicts that?

moguls are a ton of fun on skis and to be avoided at all costs on a snowboard. it's probably the main reason i ski way more now than i snowboard.

nice untracked powder, on the other hand, is much more fun on a snowboard.

Yea moguls rule on skis. It snowed 4 inches last night and I got 18 runs in from 9-1230. 15 were mogul runs on perfect soft big moguls.

2 of the top 8ish skiing days ofmy life were yesterday and today.

Re: snowboards, 57 is fast as **** dude. Anything >= ~45mph is fast. Anything close to 60 and you're traveling as fast as cars on the highway. Then ofc 70+ is just insanity. I don't think even "expert" skiers can do that.

And I know people who go very fast on snowboards. I think ceteris parabis a skier wins in a race but doesn't mean there aren't people who go as fast as edavis on their boards.

DcifrThs,

I'm disappointed in you, you get over 2 feet of fresh pow and don't even try to throw a 360, not gonna call you names but if I were it would be another way to call a cat a kitten.

then you come in here talking about being able to go faster if you were to wear skin tight gear.. duuuuuuuude

just bustin your balls, hope you had fun

Lol. So out of shape.

And 0% chance I wear tight ski gear. I'm happy skiing 40-60 mph.

And again, I'm SOOO out of shape. I did tricks in the bumps. Well, the one not gay trick I know. Got lots of shouts from the lift bc I was able to get a good amt of air and hold that twister/shifty for a full second before landing back in the mogul field (it was one of those lips cause by a catwalk separating 2 bump fields. Bottom one was way less pitchy so it wasn't bad landing and getting back on a line though I def ploughed over/absorbed a few bumps before getting speed back in check.

I had no energy left after each run. If I dropped 20lbs and trained, I'd be more inclined to really seek out lips or jumps with non bump landings to try the 360. And it would have to be on a day that isn't the best bump skiing day like ever lol.

Had the time of my life :-)!!! Thanks!

Awesome dude.

I'm excited for my weekend, heading down to Wolf Creek for the weekend. gonna stay in a cabin at the old kamp komfort from national lampoons vacation.

hoping they get some fresh snow, there's some sweet in bounds stuff that is very easy to hike to and you can get some runs you normally gotta go to the back country for.

can't wait

i mean relative to skiers.
also its not as if there is any snowboard racing culture anywhere unlike ski racing.
in the 10 years ive ridden, ive never discussed mph in snowboarding with anyone.
i just find it weird, so it must be a skier thing or maybe a new technology thing as people are now tracking their speeds.

Prob both. Speed prob more sought after by skiers and technology def plays a role obviously. 1.5 years ago (having been skiing for ~20 years at that point) I would have also said I've never had a convo about mph. Now it's super commonplace.

This was not my experience at all. The first day it hadn't snowed in 17 days and I never saw one other track. There was so much room up there and the guides knew what had been tracked out. The snow was the best I have ever skied even though it wasn't fresh. The 2nd and 3rd night we got dumped on for about 3 feet of snow and it was unreal. The last day we had waist deep powder. I can't say enough good things about Cat skiing. Best ski trip of my life.

How many times have you been? Where were you? When was the last time it had snowed?

well maybe you've never had those conditions with a cat. a lot of people have. ask anyone who rides in japan.

ive been cat skiing twice in whistler and heli is portillo. none of those days rank anywhere in top 20. and if you factor in $ and value theyd just be a waste of money.

I've done >70 on a snowboard, it gets scary in the mid 60s and then you lock in to another level and it becomes a lot smoother again, its hard to explain but everyone I ride with basically agrees. I am closely involved with a wax company here tho, so we have been tracking speeds for several years and discuss speed a lot more than I ever did living back east.

Alpine Replay is a great program for tracking, not only speed but full details of your day. I only have 15 days tracked on there so far this season with a high speed of 61 mph. That speed doesn't even rank in the top 1250 users so people are going a lot faster than some of you seem to think. The people faster than me are more weighted towards skiers, but here in Steamboat the #1 guy is on a board.

We've received another couple feet since the big day Monday and its just amazing out there. Its finally letting up a little, but should be moving back in tonight through tomorrow
