Honestly if your even 1.5 ski poles from the slope you're on a steep hill.

In other news, whistler is opening up Friday. It looks like it will be extremely limited lift access but I'm still making a weekend out of it.
here's some pics of one trail i took at alta and snowbird:

first here's a pic of the slope from the lift:

then while i was on the slope:

then from below:

what pitch is that?

finally, here's a pic from snowbird all the way skiers left where there's this long ass lift that you can follow down to a nice steep section.

what pitch does that look like? b/c i'm pretty sure if i used my poles there to make an isosceles right triangle, it wouldn't work. either the angle where it should have been a right angle would have been obtuse, or i'd have had to shorten the top pole making that side shorter than the vertical pole. either way looks steeper than 45degrees to me.

45 is steep. But steep is steeper!

yea. it's pretty crazy to see how different views make it look steeper. like i'd have thought it's quite a bit steeper than 45degrees looking at it from the lift or below.

so on that note, what about the snowbird trail? that one definitely seemed steeper while skiing it. and the 2nd day i was there new snow from the previous turn would follow me down the trail at like shoulder level so i think it was steeper but still dont really have a sense for pitch degrees. though i def see the 45degree thing based on the trees and love the MSpaint pictures above lol.

Um it looks pretty steep but I really have no idea. I'm not an expert by any means, I only know the pitch on couloir extreme because of its popularity.

Hit the mountain for first time today...DAMN I AM SORE!!!!!!!!

I got to use my K2 CTS cinch bindings for the first time. For any boarders, I def recommend them cuz you don't have to sit down and strap in every time you get off the lift. You just slip your foot in (standing) and lift the rear latch. Done in seconds and it remembers your settings so that its the same every time.

Interesting. Do they feel as responsive as normal strap in bindings?

Just picked up this New on discount:

Mild rockered board. Now we just need some snow. Should be a good all around board for the eastern ice.

They feel great too me. Some people don't like how they work, but I'm 6'3" so sitting and leaning over to constantly adjust the straps was a pain. These still have straps, but once you have them set, they're all good. Anyway, yesterday I never sat once to strap in. Quick vid to illustrate...

Stumbled upon this thread and took out my P90X Plyometrics DVD and did something resembling exercise for the first time in months remembering that I just bought a bunch of tickets to BB/JF and have a trip out to Sno (Montage) later in January as well. Time to get my ass in shape! 4:15 AM and i'm dead now...

I ski raced for around 10 years, you probably don't want to buy GS poles. Besides being bent they're designed to be fitted longer & the basket (round thing at the end of the pole) is smaller on racing poles which isn't good if you ski a lot of non groomed runs.

Got a half day of riding in Saturday morning up near Collingwood, Ontario. Private hill called Beaver Valley.

Only one chair lift was open, maybe 7 runs total. Got there at 8:45am and there were only 2 cars in the parking lot. It snowed all night so there was a good 3-4 inches of snow on top of the base. Good stuff for Ontario in my experience.

Rode the new board and bindings with my crappy rental boots and it was incredible how much better it was then my old board. I had to learn some stuff since I had been riding a ****** board for so long, most of it was just to trust my new equipment in spots where I would speed check or totally stop on my old board. Felt good to be able to rip down the hill while still feeling solid on my board.

Anyway, the chair lift broke down at like 1:30pm but we were gonna call it soon after that anyway. They had to use the generator to get everyone off the lift.

Bonus: Got my lift ticket for free since they were having issues with the guest pass system.

I went boarding a lil over a week ago and tore an ab muscle 1 hour into the day. It felt like somebody stabbed me in the gut and then I had to walk down the mountain and go home. I'll prob be good to go by next week, but it sucks getting older.

Sounds like everyone is getting pounded out west. I read somewhere Mammoth has like 96 inches of snow since Friday? Good. Night.

Tahoe is real interesting when it comes to snow. It wont snow for like 3 weeks at a time then just DUMPS for like a week straight. It is real inconsistent but when it snows it just pukes. I lived out there for 2 years and I really want to get back out there. But all of the almanac's say this year is going to be EPIC in Tahoe. Hope you have a sick year.

PS. Get out to Alpine and Squaw as much as you can. If you ride Heavenly go ride North Bowl, Firebreak and West Perimiter(all on the Nevada side). Also try the Minden run if they get enough snow.

Yeh I lived on the Nevada side on Heavenly. I lived off of Kingsbury on Benjamin Rd right where the Boulder lift is in that neighborhood. Used to not even leave the neighborhood and get on Stagecoach lift in about 2 minutes from leaving the house. There really is no reason to even go on the Cali side except for the park. But this year with the Heavenly Pass you get Sierra and Northstar my friend said. So be sure to check out both of those mountains too. '
Best groomer on Heavenly is Olympic Downhill to the bottom of Stagecoach. Ive done that run probably 300 times.
