Sh*tholes of the World Thread Sh*tholes of the World Thread

Pittsburgh, PA no longer dirty at all. Was unreal bad during the steel boom though. My family said there would be an enormous cloud over the city back then and if you parked your car for a weekend there would be a thin layer of ash on it no matter where you parked in the city.

Hey, not sayin' we can't like these sh*tholes just because they're sh*tholes. The world would be much less fun without them.

Edit: Absolutely amazing little article in VP$IP's link. Definitely worth a quick read.

I guess the Tenderloin is a ****hole by most people's definition, but I think it's pretty awesome and hilarious, as stated. Then again, this thread has had places like NYC, Seattle, and Vancouver listed as ****holes, so who knows.

I do find it amusing that the Tenderloin has .7% of the area of SF, and accounted for 14% of the cities murders (in '07). Pretty impressive (most cities might be pretty similar though. LA, I'd imagine might be like that).

I'll take exception to the post that said every inland city in CA is a ****hole. A lot are (Stockton, Bakersfield, a lot of Fresno, etc). But a bunch are okay or even pretty cool. Chico, for example, is a pretty cool town, where the only real negative is that it's in the middle of nowhere.

that list is based on stuff like "how is your commute" and "how high are your taxes" and "how much stress do you have" which is obviously why NY gets included. NY is one of the greatest cities in the world, if not the greatest, and for you to think it belongs in a list of the "****holes of the world" thread just shows how big of a mouthbreather you are. goddamn man i hate to pick on you but you are one of the biggest morons on this site based on your recent posts.

I was being sarcastic, thought that would be obvious. The list NYC was drawn from was ******ed in the context of this thread and included a bunch of cities that would be tourist destinations for me and many others. NYC in particular I intend to return to one day.

Vegas on the other hand I truly think is a ****hole. Shocker that that's not a very popular view on this site, but you know, I think writing off the whole country of India is probably a stupider proposition.

Not a city but Kavos (corfu) Greece.

Beautiful country but the place has been run into ground by tourists. ****hole

It is not surprising that in some cases, one man's sh*thole is another man's cool place.

Here are some of my experiences with the locations mentioned in this thread. I have driven completely across the U.S. twice (Interstate 90 and 80). From sea to shining sea. I have driven completely across Texas (I-20). I have been in China, Singapore, and the Philippines, and as far as the Indian Ocean.
West Texas: Hard to find even a drop of water or a blade of green grass. Vivid memory of Little League Baseball players on a field with no grass at all. But it makes for tough, resourceful people.

Los Angeles: Too big to classify, imo. Some areas much better than others. But in general, I avoid it. Just because of the congestion.

India looks and sounds awful to me, but I understand that some people like it.

Tijuana, Mexico: Horrible.

Boston: Not my cup of tea, but would not be on my SH list.

Seattle: A very bad case of derelicts in some downtown areas. They appear to be alcoholic Eskimos. Very aggressive begging. I would have crossed to the other side of the street, but they were over there too. But the topography of the city is nice.

I have not been to New Zealand, but I was surprised to learn that some people hate it.

Reno: Not great, but at least a river runs through it.

Western upstate New York: Somewhat dreary.

Pittsburgh: I have not been there in many years. The people who have lived there tell me that it has been revitalized. I hope so.

Oakland, CA: Terrible. Except the hills.

Wells, Carlin, Winnemucca, Ely, Sparks: Desolation. Almost no economic activity. But OK to drive across if you like solitude.

Vegas: I would not want to live there (except for the no income tax thing), but it has reasonably-priced hotels, and decent airline connections.

Not mentioned yet:
Philippines: Terrible poverty and horrible medical care. Hot and humid. But it was a beautiful sight when approaching the islands from sea. Came close to being killed after withdrawing about $1600 from a bank. Word traveled faster than I could.

Pittsburgh is bad. I spent the last two years living in Pittsburgh, and imo it's one of the worst cities I've been to as far as culture, food, average intelligence, etc. This isn't to say everyone living there is a mouthbreather (far from it), but anyone who lives or has lived there recently and tells you that it doesn't suck is lying or doesn't know any better. Or they live on campus.

IMO.

My point is endless rain and grey clouds is the worst. If the sun is out im fine, doesnt matter how cold it is.

Yeah, but lots of sh*thole areas outside of the trip. And that's just the sh*tholes above ground.

Where else have you lived?

What does "culture" mean to you?

I live in Philly and it is a far bigger ****hole than Pittsburgh as far as I'm concerned. There's more "culture" and good food in Philly though.

I agree with this part, but at the same time the city is not a ****hole. Although it probably would be without the schools there. Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, South Side are all not bad (if you are young anyways).

Comparing pittsburgh to philly is like comparing dog **** to horse ****. You may have your preference, but they're both ****.

Oslo City near the train/subway. One of the biggest ****holes in the Europe and the heroin capitol of the world. Absolutely disgrace.

San Salvador, El Salvador. (Central America)

Very violent and nightlife is only solid (somewhat) at the beach.

Belfast, N.Ireland. In fact N.Ireland. Stay away!

Lowestoft, England - dull, poor, filled with knuckle dragging chavs. A town with exactly zero redeeming features.

Family commitments meant that until recently I had to be a fairly regular visitor, I loathed every second that I spent in that worthless ****hole.

A good gauge of the crapness of any UK town is the presence of a Brighthouse store. These are stores that offer premium electronics items on weekly payments at enormous APR's with ridiculous 'optional' service cover plans. The bigger the Brighthouse the ****ter the town imo.

Lowestoft has a huuuudge Brighthouse.

I grew up in Fresno...u can add lemoore, hanford, orosi, cutler, orange cove, etc. to the list.

Anyone from lemoore/hanford area of CA? God how do you guys put up with such sh*tty water? I mean god awful, smelly, disgusting water coming out of the tap in those places....

Any place in Oklahoma qualifies, almost. I live in a small sh*thole called okmulgee 30 mi south of Tulsa. All of the small towns within a 100 mile radius of tulsa definitely qualify.

Oklahoma City and Tulsa have some redeeming qualities, but generally are mediocre cities and the not uncommon threat of tornadoes makes me want to finish school and GTFO ASAP....

Preston, glenpool, okmulgee, etc.
