Re: Sh*tholes of the World Thread
Canberra, Australia: it's where public servants go to die.
Glasgow, Scotland: There might be some nice bits but in general it's ****ing awful.
I concur with the Milan hate and wish to add the entire island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples. Come to think of it, you might want to add Naples to the list as well.
Nairobi, Kenya: One of the two cities in the world where I have been in genuine fear for my life.
Johannesburg, South Africa: The second one.

I thought Milan was a fashion hub with supermodels strolling around. Is it really that bad?

Re: Sh*tholes of the World Thread
Just for extra/renewed clarity and based on my OP, sh*tholes come in two broad categories: Certified Sh*tholes, geographical large or small, mean literally: don’t even stop for gas or to change planes. Prime examples of this first category are: Quartzsite, Arizona and Barstow, California for the geographically small, and the Horn of Africa (countries of Somalia, Eritrea and most of Ethiopia) and North Korea, for the geographically large.
Category two sh*tholes are geographic locations, large or small, that although are in general sh*tholes can be worth a visit or can even be lived in or near without too much contamination to the soul, rotting away of the mind, or endangerment of life and limb. In other words garden locations and oasis areas abound enough to mollify the sh*ttiness of the location. Prime examples of category two are Los Angeles, California for the small area, and for the geographical large area let’s use the country of India.
Thus, a visit to Milan, Italy or Lyon, France (Naples is on the cusp, it depends on your criminal connections) could be fun and enjoyable but a visit to Quartzsite, Arizona or Stockton, California, or North Korea is not; not in any way, shape, or form.
Hope this helps.

Re: Sh*tholes of the World Thread
Christchurch, New Zealand.
If only the earthquake had sent the whole city to the bottom of the pacific.
Invercargill, New Zealand.
At the bottom of the country. Cold. Miserable. Lifeless. Even the offer of free tertiary education is not enough to stop people leaving in droves.
The entire West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
It's a nice drive down the coast though. Just fill up before hand and don't stop before you reach the glaciers.

What's wrong with Parma? I spent a short evening there years ago, seemed gorgeous if a little dull.
Also Benidorm is a british tourist shthole on the Costa Blanca down south, the Costa Brava north of palafrugell is one of the prettiest parts of Spain with great food, amazing underdeveloped beaches and decent people.

I've been. Parts of it were really cool to me, parts where just ugly and grimy. It's pretty industrial i seem to recall.

That's a big call Zeno. India IMO is pure category 1 IMO. There is so much dirt, grime, poo, rubbish, overpopulation, hopelessness, superstition and general unenlightenment I feel infected being anywhere in India. Once you've seen a dozen people poo unashamedly in the streets - and squished it under your shoes - nowhere in India looks good any more. Poverty is no excuse for that kind of disgusting filth. I mean, even its most beautiful spot is a garbage dump:

More: (warning: graphic and disgusting, like India)

Eh no, I mean it is a huge city and it has a lot to offer in term of entertainment, including what you mentioned, but if you care also about how a city looks and liveability you will struggle to find something to like about it. This sums up pretty good how Milan actually is: http://www.roadjunky.com/guide/1281/...-chic-****hole. Add to this that there is plenty of pollution all year around and traffic is also a nightmare.

Re: Sh*tholes of the World Thread
I second Reno. Never been to Detroit, but visited Reno for a gambling detour from north Tahoe and that ****hole was worse than what I imagine Detroit to be (with no black ppl though).
One of my online gf always told me about ppl ****ting on the streets in India. Always thought she was pulling my chain.
As for Africa, well I really wanna go to Namibia. So I hope that is not a ****hole.

just because you are bitter doesn't mean new zealand is a ****hole. well invercargill is sort of lol but you're delusional otherwise.
The crappy parts of Reno (downtown) aren't getting enough love in this thread
