Calcutta

If you haven't been to India or a 3rd world country you don't really know what a ****hole is

Rubbish dumps just on the side of the road

kids defecating anywhere, no public toilets

constant beeping of horns (as in every 1-2 seconds)

95% men, with the look of I want to die on their face

the 5% of women you do see are freaking ugly sewer rats

no drainage, when it rains you get knee deep in waste

the beggars dont just beg and are done they just be your friend for 30min then have some sob story before asking for money

everything smells like waste

terrible animal cruelty at the morning markets, dudes riding pushbikes with like 50 live chickens hanging off the front, the chickens have the same look most of the indian guys have

A few years back I was driving from South Bend, Indiana to Chicago and I was running verrrry low on gas. I turned off the highway and made the mistake of driving through the outskirts of Gary, Indiana. All I can say is, Holy S that place is a dump!!! Now I live in Northern Jersey and have walked through Newark, Passaic, and even Paterson....none of those cities compared to Gary. I can honestly say that even though it was broad daylight I was nervous driving through the city.

Hammond, Gary IN. Radcliffe KY and alot of eastern KY. Tunica and Memphis. Jacksonville Fl. Gainesville TX. Ok is just barren in general to me. Although I've neve been to OK City. Countless other little towns that just kinda blend together when your on the road. I feel a bit bad calling these places sh**-holes because I have had some great times in alot of them. Some bad too though, Gainesville Tx, is actually a pretty cool lake town in north tx, but has to be on my list because I had a gun pointed at my chest while there.

If you haven't fled yet it is time to do so now. Just about anywhere else would be an improvement. Good Luck.

Warrington, UK.

The centre is just putrid. Quay Bank train station is one of the ugliest things I've seen but then you walk outside and there's a massive soap powder factory pumping out crap, which is a 5 minute walk away from the main centre. Nearby is also a statue proudly displaying Irish murderer Oliver Cromwell. The walk there is spent wading through litter, past decrepit houses. Then you get to the centre and half the shops have closed down. The others are poundland, charity shops, bookies and the ubiquitous greggs, costa and suchlike. Indeed, the best looking restaurant I actually saw was a Nandos. But the main hive of activity is just as the side of that monstrosity, it's the indoor shopping centre. It fills me with such despair that our towns and cities are geared up for shopping. That's where the centre is, wherever H&M selling slave labour garments fresh from Bangladesh as the workers dodge buildings collapsing. Kate Moss appearing sultrily in the window, a fetishism that completely masks the thousands who actually produce the things they sell.

Inside the indoor shopping centre are all the old favourites, selling precisely the same things you'd find in any of their other trillion of shops across the country. Nowhere is this more depressing that Waterstones. I love book shops, but with Waterstones you're met with largely the same books as they have in every other Waterstones dotted about the country. Particularly when they're fairly small. In the kids section there were two girls who looked about 12 talking about beating up another girl and looking over books about boxing.

I then scarpered from there and had a look at the other side of the centre. There were two shopping areas there that are set up like out of town shopping centres. Plastic bags and Mcdonald's wrappers floating through the air, crumbling buildings with hideous signs on them and the classic British precinct, which are invariably cesspits. Bursting through the door was a drunken lout shouting expletives at the top of his lungs to a groups of youths.

There aren't any public spaces in the centre of Warrington, other than a small grassland by the town hall. Somewhat akin to Dubai airport for instance, if you want to sit down with your friends you'll either have to perch on some hideous wall, sit on a metal bench in a shopping centre, or forced into costa or starbucks.

I then went to where I was supposed to be going, a pub to meet up with people who advertise themselves as looking to make positive change in the world. Next to the pub, which is only a 5 minute walk from the centre, is simply a large open scrubland with nothing going on. But the meeting was baffling, hilarious and deeply worrying. Here were the people in Warrington and around it that baulk the current system. But what were they talking about? Chemtrails, Ufos, avoiding council tax, mercury in jabs, curing cancer in 6 weeks with water, Obama being the anti-christ, the 3 visions of Fatima, etc. And I'm sat there like, wow.

Warrington, what a total hell hole. And yet, I'm strangely attracted to places like that. They're fascinating.

But going back to the town and city centred around wherever the big shops are. Nowhere is this agenda more obvious than Milton Keynes, with the simply horrendous shopping centre as the centre of the town. A truly bleak place, a beacon of all that's wrong in the country. When they were designing a new town, they put shopping at the top of things to look after. Is that the best we can do?

Bangladesh is one giant hellhole. The entire population lives and works in the most crowded, dirty, hot place you can imagine. Most of you can't even imagine it if you think Hamilton, Ontario is a hellhole. Your chances of dieing in a sweatshop fire in Bangladesh or being washed away and drowned in a sea of overflowing sewage is like 1 in 3...and you would be happy about it.

Bangladesh has 10 million more people than Russia (155 million) and is barely bigger than Louisiana. THAT is a sh*thole.

The nature of the thread is first world **** holes. Obviously some village in Africa without running water is worse than Gary Indiana. Duh.
10-20-2013 , 01:14 PM
Also keep in mind that places like Bangladesh serve as valuable sources of cheap labor and resources and are necessary so that folks in San Francisco and Austin can continue to live the good life. As opposed to cities like Youngstown, which have long outlived their utility to the global economy and should probably just be euthanized.

- Seattle - the suburbs directly east of the CBD. The city itself is pretty awful - dark and gloomy, full of freaks, and surrounded by an endlessly depressing cold rainforest. You search in vain for a normal face. This place was the setting for emo vampire movies containing wolf rape. Enough said. But even it has some redeeming qualities, especially the suburbs to the North. Not so between Broadway and 23rd - it's as if all the lifeless, twisted, perverted hipster bearded freakish scum that Seattle could spew out got together with their gay pals and decided to create their own paradise. Avoid at all costs lest you come out a little less human.
I dig your writing.

Camden NJ is the biggest ****hole I've ever been in. And I'm including third-world places like Nairobi and the outskirts of Shanghai in that.

When I read that it was the murder capital of the US, I was like, "...yeah, that sounds about right."
