Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

You need to be honest with yourself and admit that organizing the cards with the beckett value is just an exercise in OCD. You might as well gather gravel and measure and catalogue the individual pieces. In fact, if you had 2000 pieces of gravel, you might get more money for it than your collection. Nobody wants your cards and the beckett value is pretty meaningless.

Just go through the collection and take out any cards of value and list the rest on Ebay and see what you can get.

in the card collecting world, $0.05 is a euphemism for "completely worthless."
have you found any cards in your collection that list for more than $1 on becketts? you might be able to get about $0.10 each for them.

Save yourself the time and trouble of cataloging 2000 commons, put them in a box, take them to a thrift store that is a 501(c)3 charity, get a receipt, and claim something reasonable, like $50-60 on your taxes.

Also True.

I would do this - But I always have $500 in donations anyway. I heard after that it starts to get suspicious and you have to fill out a form. Plus it never helps out my refund anyway.

---

I think I AM going to put them on eBay as much as it's going to kill me. I'm going to list 200 at a time and hope for the best.

PS - I tried to sign up for an Amazon Sellers account and doing a bulk import and listing them all for .01 (seller would pay shipping), but it wasn't that easy! Need more info on the cards I didn't have!

Your cards have little to no value. By little value, I mean you would lucky to get $1 for the entire lot.

How important is condition for older cards

Beyond the worthless x thousand 80s/90s cards I have a few tobacco cards, a mays or two, a banks, a signed rose and some card from the senators and then maybe a few more from 50s/60s...they are all in protectors and what not but I'm sure they aren't in mint condition etc

Condition is so key. Really needs to be a PSA 9 or up in order for it to be of any value to a collector.

I don't remember them having that grading back in 80s/90s...and are there really a bunch of tobacco cards in that good of shape floating around?

Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

Probably one of the smartest things that I did as a kid was to get rid of my massive collection in early 90's. I traded a ton of stuff that is now basically worthless for ungraded '62 and '63 Mantles that I had slabbed and something like $2k.

Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

The best advice given is just put it up as an auction at $0.01 and make sure to charge enough for your shipping costs and fees ($15?), let the market sort it out. Describe them as best you can without going crazy and don't bother breaking them up into multiple auctions.

I recently sold 100+ old comic books ('90s mostly) for like $12.50 plus around $15 shipping. I'm sure the "value" in those silly value books would have added up to well over $100, but I was just happy to be rid of them.

I also sold a bunch of graphic novels as a lot ($30ish) and a "very rare" computer game ($10). You have to let go of the idea that the stuff is worth anything, and just trust that the invisible hand will probably give you a decently fair price.

Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

Condition of older cards can have a big impact on the price, but old cards of good players have some value no matter the condition. The cards I sold for over $500, none of them were graded. Some looked to my naked eye to be at least an 8, like a Jim Palmer rookie. The Mays I would say was only a 5-6. A 9 or 10 can bring the value way up, but you still should be able to get something for tobacco cards or cards from the 50s/60s.

Condition is important for all cards, but if you have some truly rare cards that are in rough shape, you can still get money for them, it will just take time. If, for instance, you found a shoebox with a bunch of '52 Topps commons in it, you would be able to find a buyer...eventually.

For stuff like a Mays, if it's beat up, it still has value, you just have to resign yourself to the fact that the "book price" is a guideline. If it lists for $200, but has rounded corners and is off-center, it might go for $20. Personally, I would just keep it for the coolness factor.

If you look at some "box breaks" on YouTube you will see guys tossing aside every base card in a $200 box, those base cards have more than a $1 worth of material yet are deemed worthless unless they form a complete set. Collecting has completely changed, unless it's a player someone loves or a very old card pre 80's at the very least, people aren't going to want to have them take up space.
