Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

Any card collectors out there ...??...

So recently I have plenty of time on my hands and I've been cleaning house. I came across my collection of 2000+ baseball cards. Knowing full well that most aren't worth anything I debated just throwing up an auction on eBay.

Then I got an idea. I purchase a subscription to Beckett for $9 for a month and I'm going to list out all the cards in an excel spreadsheet along with their Beckett values. For Example:

161- 1992 Upper Deck #437 Bruce Hurst $0.05
162- 1992 Topps #41 Craig Lefferts $0.05
163- 1986 Topps #84 Curt Young $0.10

This way it's easy for me to list them all on eBay and/or Craigslist easy.

My question to the forum is:

If I have 2000 cards that all have a value of $0.05. What do you think they will sell on eBay for?

Note: They are all in what I would consider "mint" condition. Which probably just means great in the collectors world.

--

What I really want to do after this is use the money to buy ONE card worth the value of all of these. So say if the auction goes for $100. Then I'll just buy a $100 baseball card (maybe a Mike Schmidt) or some sort of autographed sports collectable.

I'm not sure why you bought a subscription and not just one issue. You'll probably pay more for a year of Beckett's than you will get for the whole collection.

Do you have any good cards? How much are they going for on Ebay? Just look around. Nobody wants your 2000 random cards worth $.05 apiece. If you get $10 for the whole lot I would be surprised.

Not sure this is really EDF worthy, but baseball cards are pretty much worthless these days. I think I have 3000+ cards in an old closet at home and know they can't be worth much (despite Beckett convincing me otherwise 15 years ago).

My mom brought some of my old cards over this weekend. I have a tim wakefield rookie card and a ron washington Tampa Thunder Senior league card you may be interested in. Serioulsy though above poster is right, we all got hosed growing up. God thinking about how much my parents spent on these things is gross.

ms,

I think you'd be lucky to get $5 for them.

You should sell your valuable cards, if any, individually. The rest you can throw away or give to a younger relative. Tough luck if you don't have any valuable cards.

Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

I didn't actually buy a year subscription to Beckett. I just bought 1 month for like $9. It's really easy to type in the card and look up the value.

I really didn't think I would get crap either .. Like maybe a couple bucks for the whole thing. I have spoken with a few people outside 2p2 and they told me that I should be able to get $100 minimum, but no more than $200. Here's a little more proof:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200-Old-Base...item3cb57edb4a

... Hope? lol. In all fairness, there's nothing special about that lot. Doesn't give the age, condition, or even cards that are there. It should be a bunch of Kellogg Card's. Besides the couple dollars he spent on the template .. Those cards shouldn't be worth 2 cents. Maybe there's still a market out there?

Any who, if this works I'm honestly thinking about buying up some bulk lots and doing some data entry! Though that's way to good to be true.

Current goal = Make over $100 after ebay & PayPal fees.

Ugh .. not looking good for me. If I would have to play devils advocate. At least I can say that I have all of mine organized with the name and the beckett value. So the buyer already knows what they are getting.

I'll keep everybody updated and post the link once I launch the auction!

Goal: Get $100 AFTER eBay taxes and/or fees!

Re: Selling Baseball Card Collection - How much will it sell for?

IMO people have a hard time selling most collectables because they know what they paid for them and struggle to differentiate between that price and what the market will pay for them. Between the time you spend creating the spreadsheet, creating the ad, dealing with getting payment, creating postage/mailing the cards, paying eBay/PayPal fees, and paying $9 for the subscription you're going to end up doing a whole lot of work for much less than what your time is worth.

I'd list them for $.01 with no reserve and shipping fees to cover actual shipping as well as anticipated eBay/PayPal fees and let the market sort the value of the cards.

I got $530 for my card collection from when I was like 9-16. I had a 58 Mays and some cards from the 60s and 70s. Those are what people wanted. All the cards from the 80s and 90s were just throw-ins. I surely spent thousands on it over the years.

Cataloging every card seems like way too much effort for the payoff. Hourly rate must be horrible as imagine the cataloging alone could take 10 hours.

What do you think people would rather buy, unopened packs with the chance of finding a gem, or opened packs knowing they aren't going to get any?
