I have a lot of experience with this...as that is my age group and I go out drinking a lot.

I personally like the tenderloin. Whiskey Thieves, KoKos, Edinburgh Castle, Blur, Hemlock etc. These tend to be dive-y (actually, i listed them from most to least prob). I like these bars the most because I like to meet people while out...not just go and not talk to anyone new...and people at these places tend to mingle. Bring cash...

Polk st (north of Hemlock) is fun too...more button-up crowd but still fun people.

If you want to go out and get blackout drunk like a man on a mission, I suggest North Beach.

Okey, we've been recommended to stay way from tenderloin perhaps this is a bit exaggerated? Any parts we should stay away from at night? We appreciate the advice, thanks!

klior,

Depending on the 25yo, the right answer could be Marina, Upper Polk Street, Lower Polk Street/TenderNob, North Beach or Mission.

Describe yourself and I can give you the right answer. There's not really anyplace in the Tenderloin a male needs to worry about walking around, even ****faced drunk at 2am. Just look like you're aware of your surroundings and not afraid.

This is very true and I almost answered with this. Then I just decided to give my take...

Common sense keeps you out of trouble...stay out of allies and walk with purpose.

I'm 24 and my friend is 22. Back home in Sweden we mostly go to university bars or middle to upper scale non univ bars. I'm soon finished with a master in chemical engineering and my friend is half way to a master in industrial engineering. We are social and I'd say good looking guys.

Edit: Btw we saw the giants play tonight. AT&T park was awesome! We are not the biggest fans of baseball (don't even understand the rules) but the atmosphere at the stadium made it a very nice experience!

klior,

Upper Polk Street (McTeagues, Buccaneer, Shanghai Kellys, etc area), North Beach (Boardroom, Northstar, etc area), Union Street (Bus Stop, Blue Light, and every other place on that street) and the Marina (bars on Chestnut, Lombard) are where I think you'll have the most fun.

hi all,

going to napa for labor day weekend. it's a last min trip i just planned over the weekend so hotel is pretty $. im not a drinker so really just flying up to try out all the restaurants in napa (first time there!).

i skimmed this thread and didn't see too much discussion. i made some reservations based on reputation + availability. feel free to add any suggestions/thoughts! i promise i will report back with pictures.

saturday: arrive in the late morning. lunch @ bouchon, dinner @ ad hoc
sunday: lunch @ bistro jeanty. dinner @ either etoile or zuzu.
i also got on the waitlist for french laundry but highly doubt id get in.
others in consideration: bottega, ubuntu,

question: how casual is "casual"? most of the restaurants above outside of etoile has a casual dress code. is tshirt + shorts + sneakers casual or is that simply too goofy?

hanster,

Casual places are full of people wearing jeans plus a polo/golf shirt. Obviously you can go up/down from there. You'll see people in shorts/t-shirts at lunch on warm days, not at dinner.

That is a great list of places. Cyrus is the place not on your list that you should definitely try to get into if possible.

Hi Diablo,

Thanks! I've seen you praise cyrus in the elBulli thread. It's a tad far drive but there are a couple of openings I should be able to make for two. Is it worth the 1.5 hr drive from Yountville?

Hanster,

Decent list. I just got back from Napa yesterday. Best meal I had while there was at Terra, and that's including Ad Hoc, Morimoto, and the Slanted Door in San Fran.

Since you seem like a Keller fan, I have to recommend the Hill Family Estate Garden Tour . It's basically an hour tour of the one of the gardens behind The French Laundry that supplies TFL with specialty fruits, veggies, and edible flowers. Definitely very informative and cool. After that you go back to the tasting room for 5-6 of Hill's wines. IMO it was a great way to spend a few hours.

I've been there, pretty awesome. I think you have to know him to get in. There are maybe 12 tables in there. When I was there, 4 of the tables were occupied, a random couple walked in and he said, "NO, all reserved!"

Does anyone have any recommendations for good places to go skydiving for the first time anywhere within a few hours of SF?

While we're here, does anyone know if there's anything you can do to make your first dive a solo rather than tandem dive?

Thanks much.

Thanks Doug for the recommendation for the Hill Family Garden Tour. it was awesome and we got to eat a lot. The funny thing was when he asked me how I found out about the place and I had to say I heard from a "friend" so he asked me who it was and I said a friend online. Oh well. It was really cool. Would def go back again to try more fruits/produces at diff times of the year!

Glad it worked out for you.

How was ad hoc for dinner? I did a Sunday brunch there (ice berg salad with bacon ladrons and blue cheese, chicken fried steak with eggs and home fries, strawberry and creme fraiche over lemon cake). The portions were very generous and I found myself wishing that I had scheduled them for a dinner instead.

Ad Hoc was great. Thomas Keller was actually there for a meeting so it was pretty cool seeing him there with his staff. I found this to be the best meal of the trip, (compared to Bouchon and Ubuntu). We cancelled our lunch at Bistro Jeanty and dinner at Etoile because we were too full from Ad Hoc still lol.

Off the Grid was outside my work randomly today...so I had a Kuni Tikka Masala roll thing that was pretty good. I also had a mama's empanada, beef, and that was excellent. They were both 5 dollars and pretty good.
