To second some posters above:

Brenda's is delicious and reasonably priced. Small inside.

Burma Superstar is probably my favorite restaurant in the city. They have a famous chop salad, get that as app for sharing. This is also a fun area in general.

21st amendment is hilarious. It is 3 dollar beers (up to 12 percent mind you) and you get drunk in a warehouse...awesome eclectic crowd.

____________

Great concert venues: The Independent, Bottom of the Hill, Great American Music Hall

For a night out, I like lower polk st/the tenderloin/nob hill. Think of this area as a gradient South to North, with north being nicer.

For day hoppin' and shoppin' I'd check out Valencia st between 14th and 28th. Lots of cool shops and stuff for daytime activity and tacos. You can also hang in Deloris park on nice days.

After 17 as a vegetarian (14 of those in sfbay), I have two bacon-related recommendations:

1. Broken Record on Geneva (southern edge of SF). Delicious bistro food in a dive bar. The whole menu sounds fantastic but I ordered the burger (bacon ground into the beef) both times. Crocker Amazon has a nice park though there's no particular reason to visit this neighborhood apart from the destination burger (sufficient, imo).

2. Kefa Coffee on 29th in Oakland. Brian's breakfast sandwich (avo, spinach, egg, cheese, bacon) is the most gratifying thing I've eaten in recent memory. Sounds simple enough but it's perfectly executed. $8.50 but I would happily pay $20 and accept attendant slagging for being a yuppie food tool.

Cappucino on the first visit was really outstanding (better than Ritual); second visit merely very good. Cute-hot not-thin not-fat barista > skinny hipster chick.

I'm spending two weeks in Temescal, sort of trying it out as a place to live. Obviously spoiled for choice here. Any recommendations?

Got a burger last night at Bullshead...definite kudos to the forum for recommending this place. Not cheap (duh SF) but I definitely liked it.

Last week, went to Sneaky's inside Rebel. IMO the meat is terrific, but I personally thought the sauce was too vinegary for my taste. Expensive, too.

Recently went to Nick's Crispy Tacos and it was very good. Both the carnitas and the shrimp tacos are highly recommended. Make sure you get them "Nick's way".

Ike's is supposed to be the nuts but I've never been. Line is always crazy. La Cumbre is whatev, you could walk into any random taqueria in the neighborhood and get something similar IMO. Not that a random taqueria in the Mission is bad...

Ikes is awesome. They were threatened to be shut down I remember a couple months ago but didnt due to violation of building. Anything you get there is good but I'd call ahead to order and pick up instead of wait in that horrendous line. You can then eat at the park and walk to Bi-rite after. My friend and I did that and it's a must!

I live in SF so hit me up if you have any other questions.

hit the tee off bar and grill on 34th and clements tonight, naer the golf course by the prisidio.

had the fish and chips and spinich enchilada. very good but less good than last year.
still recommnent the place as its a fun spot to go, (dive bar), and the food is good with huge portions and cheap prices for what you get.

La Cumbre is STRAIGHT UP NASTY!!!! Seriously, I lived 4 blocks away for most of my life, and would never think of going there. It's god awful. I made the mistake of giving it another shot a couple years back, and was horrified when they took some old carne asada, threw it in a little paper bowl, and microwaved it before throwing it in my nasty burrito.

If you're from out of town (or in town for that matter) do yourself a favor - GO TO LA TAQUERIA!!! I actually took a large group of 2p2'ers around the Mission on a Taco Crawl last week before heading to Tahoe for the week, and they all loved it (they also loved La Coroneta which is close).

As far as Ikes goes, it's good, though I'd recommend Sub Center or Marina Subs.

Fwiw - the MvF SF was pretty awful, and really made me question how people from other areas must feel about the spots he chooses there. I know my friend from LA was pretty unimpressed with Adam's recommendations in his area as well.

New to SF, trying to organize a happy hour for ~6-8 people. Priorities: decent beer, reasonable prices ($5 cocktails / $3 beers / cheapish pitchers would be cool), reasonable chance of place to sit or at least not ridiculously crowded standing area.

Most people are working in the financial district nearish to Montgomery BART stop I think.

Hey, I don't know if this is the correct forum for answering my questions but EDF always seems to have reasonable responses.

I'm going on an exchange year to Santa Clara University after this summer. I'm a 23 year old from Sweden and obviously quite stoked about this opportunity I have been given. Since time is starting to add up I figured better prepare early instead of doing everything in the last minute (as I usually do).

From what I've gathered the school has the option to live in dorms at the campus. However from the research I have done it seems to be almost exclusively 18-20 year olds and thus the rules are very hard when it comes to alcohol (not allowed I believe) and parties. I would be awesome to live at the campus with other students however being 23 and used to not having to worry about alcohol consumption makes it a big turnoff. This has led to the option to maybe live off campus at close proximity to the university (maximum 15-20 min by bike). Since I have no idea about Santa Clara or bay area I don't really know where to look or how to go about this.

So do you guys have any good advice when it comes to housing in Santa Clara? What could I expect rates to be for a single apartment or studio? Is craigslist the best alternative? Which parts should I look at? etc

Not sure about Santa Clara specifically, but American Colleges in general have usually one or two dorms that are for older students and where alcohol is allowed...You won't have to worry about drunk freshman shtting on the bathroom floor, or peeing in the elevator.

Would be better for you to do because you make friends fast and that will help you understand Santa Clara the fastest.

I'm headed to SF this weekend.... thanks thread, can't wait to check out La Taqueria.

btw, I'm googling directions for all the places we're going.... every single one (of 8 or 10), it's like "walk .2 miles, get on bus/light rail, get off, walk .2 miles." unbelievable.
