I wasn't expecting much but often by the end of the intro bits of memories would get recalled.

Definitely recommend not scrolling or skipping, i started doing that and then realized my mistake and started over. It takes some time for it to come back.

I'm pretty sure I really enjoyed Cops and yet if you asked me if there were a cop themed cartoon yesterday I'd have confidently said none existed.

Very strange trip. Weirdest part is where I grew up the only channel we got was PBS until we moved when I was much older.

Really strange for me, making me realize how little of my childhood I can recall and yet some cartoons which never played a big role in my life suddenly bring out all these memories. A lot to process for now. Will post some more later.

Bullwinkle may very well been the best thing ever produced for American television.

Spoiler:
Stampede!

I was surprised to see it in there. Did they make new episodes in the 80s?

I remember Cities of Gold!! I loved that **** as a kid, have no memory whatsoever of what actually happened in it.

Cities was the only cartoon I’d seen that had a long, linear narrative arc instead of being a series of stand-alone episodes. Every episode felt like they were just a bit closer to the Cities of Gold. That was heavy stuff for me at the time.

lol I just read the plot on wiki, that was crazy epic stuff for an 80’s cartoon.

I didn’t know Cities was made in Japan, I guess that makes it the first anime I’ve ever seen.

Just watched an episode of cops. It was indeed a show I enjoyed watching as a child. Perhaps it was poorly branded as it has far more in common with superheros a la TNMNT than with a cop drama. It's also quite possible this is where the Wachowskis sourced inspiration for Morpheus because the police chief is basically a dead ringer for him.

It's an interesting era as it is the peak and the death of cartoons as advertisements. For example, Rocky and Bullwinkle was developed and paid for by IIRC Wheaties.

You can see a clear lack of quality and imagination as Hanna-Barbera loses they're near monopoly due to crappy cost effective animation and lackluster storylines. Laverne and Shirley? What demographic is that supposed to appeal to?

But pretty much most cartoons in the 80s were just extensive ads but this time not for breakfast cereal but for the toy lines.

And you also get the beginnings of Disney's dominance with Duck Tales being so out of place and groundbreaking when it came out in the late 80s that it spawned a sea change of imitation that would define 90s era cartoons.

Will check out the cities shuffle. Never saw that before. Have a lot to say on this, will probably write a bit more later after digesting some more and loving all the contributions here ITT

Cities of Gold was on Nickelodeon for a while in the mid-80s I think, so there are definitely a lot of 80s kids in the US who have seen it. Though who knows if they remember it.
