MissChriss, where were those photos taken? They remind me of Portugal.
I've never been to Portugal before.
I took those pictures in:

1) my back garden in Holland.
2) a Dutch island called Ameland when I went there with school.
3) Same as 2.
4) A little English town close to Bristol, where I live atm.
5) A city called Sitges in Spain, half an hour from Barcelona.
6) Same as 5.

Re: The Photography Thread

I love those macros, Spanaway.

Here's some photos of my fish tank. They were all taken with a lower end Canon digital. I don't have the camera any more but it did have a macro function. Taking the pictures of the moving fish takes a lot of patience. The camera wasn't fast and neither was I. So I just prefocused and waited for the fish to swim into the viewfinder. For every one photo that turned out OK there were 40 that I deleted.

Do you have a high-res of that picture you could link to? I would love to run it through Photoshop and include it in my selection of different desktops.

Ive sold a few but only cards, so not much money at all. Its a relatively new site but I think they have a few problems so far - too many people posting photos but enough enough buyers, they need to market it more towards the people who would like to buy original photographs/artwork. That, and they dont exercise much in the way of quality control so there is an awful lot of very average photos on there, its hard to sort through it all to find the good stuff.

So I'm just using it as a convenient way to host a small gallery, if anyone ever buys anything its a bonus.

If you are being serious, thanks. I'm really an amateur, and while Id like to think I have quite a good eye I have a lot to learn, a whole lot, and Im not just trying to be modest.

all the kids are doing different things, some are obviously smiling at the photographer, some are confused, on kids doing the binoculars thing w/ his hands, and it looks like one kid is trying to, but it's not going to well
... it's one of those photos you can look at for a long time and wonder exactly what was going on when the photo was taken

where was the photo taken?

Ya I meant the last two pics mostly, and the 4th a bit. Spain is close enough.

Hi Chaos,

Nice pictures- I am experimenting around with postprocessing with Photoshop etc. and would be interested to learn from you. Some of your pictures look to be processed using HDR techniques (#2 esp.).

Did you use Photoshop or Photomatix for this?

What kind of processing do you typically do for your pictures (even those not specifically HDR'ed? Do you have a generic workflow you apply to all pictures or are you trying to accomplish something specific for each picture.

I'm sure there are others who are experienced with post-processing, please jump in and give your 2c, I would be interested in learning as much as I can about this.

Thanks
J

Re: The Photography Thread

I just bought a new lens that I've been dying to have for a while (Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8L if you're wondering). I haven't had a chance to really take it out and do a bunch of shooting, but hopefully soon.

Any gear that you guys have on your wishlist?

My current list:

A full-frame body (probably whatever replaces the Canon 5D)
Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS
Canon EF 85mm f1.2L
Pocket Wizards (remote flash transmitter/receivers)

Re: The Photography Thread

Suzzer99 ...

It is a long thread, so I don't know if this was discussed: while it is a great hobby, I am not sure what kind of living you can make off of it. Even before the Internet, unless you are doing weddings, or other type of commission work, there isn't a lot of money in being a free-lance photographer. Today, this even more true as the Internet has enabled the compilation of large repositories of photos that can be purchased at a relatively low price. A corporation who needs photos for an annual report used to hire a photographer to take the photos needed, or purchase stock photos from a photographer. Now, they can subscribe to any number of stock photo sites/services where for a couple hundred bucks they can have access to thousands and thousands of photos.

It's been a hobby of mine since 1977 ... did the college yearbook thing where we rolled and developed our own film, developed our own B&W photos, etc. Paid for part of my college as a "party pic" guy for frats and sororities. Now with digital, it is a amazing what can be done for so little cost.

Good luck ... take the classes as you will love knowing the technical aspects of photography. Makes it even more fun.

My wishlist was fulfilled today

After being without an D-SLR for over 2 years now (previously had a 10D), the wife and i decided to buy each other new cameras.

I picked her up the XTi kit and she got me the 40D kit (28-135 is).

Ordering the 70-200mm 2.8L this week from B&H but I do not think I will pony up for the IS model. I also want a 24-70L bad, but it will have to wait a bit...

Her first reaction after taking a couple of play shots around the house with her XTi, and after having shot with a Nikon D40 for her paper for the past year...

"Holy **** baby, I think I better use this one for work"

My wishlist is being fulfilled today. Amazon should be delivering to me:

Canon 40D
Canon 85/1.8 lens (for basketball photos)

This will go along with my rental lens that just got delivered from ZipLens:

Canon 10-22

And the Strobist stuff I just got (580 EX II flash, light stand, umbrella, Cactus radio triggers). I'll be driving down the west coast this holiday season, so I'll hopefully have a chance to post some good landscapes here.

EDIT: I hate UPS sometimes. They have rescheduled delivery for some completely unknown reason. Looks like they might have tried to deliver on Saturday? I just don't understand because it's supposed to be next business day delivery.

Just a couple thoughts... I don't know what you're using this for, but given that this is a pretty long lens and a lot of it's use will be outdoors in decent light, I'd almost considering going with the 70-200 f/4L IS instead of the 2.8 without IS. The IS on the f/4 should give you those two extra stops that you're losing with the f/4 and additionally, the f/4 version will be much, much lighter (2.9 lbs for the 2.8 versus 1.6 lbs on the f/2.8)

I just think that on a long lens having the IS might be more valuable than the faster glass.
